I've been taking Marianna to CCD (or whatever they call Religious Ed here) between Sunday Masses for about a month now to meet other Catholic kids and work a bit of socilizing into her life. I haven't paid the $50 yet though as the instructor and the DRE couldn't answer my questions. I didn't think they were very hard questions either - 1. what books are you using and 2. what is the goal for 6th grade religious education?
So to answer #1, I snuck into the classroom early last Sunday and did a tiny bit of snooping, if they won't let me take the kids' books home ("We prefer they are left here.") for a preview, I at least wanted the title to do a little research on my own. They are using Blest Are We by Silver Burdett Ginn which is a part of Scott Foresman. There is plenty available at their website, including a Scope and Sequence correlated to the CCC but I am curious if anyone has opinions on the program?
Maybe I didn't word question #2 very well, but when I asked it the DRE kind of gave a general overview of everything (very general). "The kids study the Bible using their workbooks and for First Holy Communion they watch a video in the springtime."
What do your 6th graders do in CCD?

Jennifer,
I don't know how to do the fancy linking but check out this page at Catholic Culture for a review of Blest Are We.

As Hollee points out, there are some resources that point out the problems with "Blest..."
The first clue that there might be a problem is that they don't let the kids take them home. I'd bolt, also.
Here's the link. I don't agree with the author on everything, but she is correct about the problems with this workbook.

Hollee, I couldn't get your exact link to pop up, was it to 'Blest Are We' - A New Red Flag? That article is very eye-opening, to say the least! I am so glad you sent me to the Catholic Culture Website, it is such a treasure trove, I keep finding more and more wonderful sections there.

It certainly raised a red flag for me, MacBeth!
I felt so sneaky to be skulking around in a church trying to see the books, which incidentally, they keep boxed up during the week so I had to prowl around opening boxes good thing everyone wears flipflops down here, I could hear people coming down the hallway a mile off.
I just want to toss sails right about now...

Hollee and MacBeth,
Thank you for the links in your responses yesterday, I think it is time I start rereading some of the old CCD threads here. There is such an incredible body of knowledge available here, filled with links to pertinent articles and documents and reviews.
This community, our forum, the interconnected blogs, is a true Blessing I am very grateful for!
