I had to post about this wonderful book I just started reading, Mary's Flowers: Gardens, Legends and Meditations.
I posted more about it this morning at my garden blog (Marigolds for Mama). Theresa (Digging In) is also going to be reading the book so I thought I would mention it here and ask if anyone else has read it, or perhaps can share more resources for learning about Mary Gardens. This book is so inspiring and thorough and just beautiful to read. 
I'm so happy it's May (tomorrow)!

Thank you so much for the book and Mary Garden link. I am thrilled! I have been wanting to do this for quite some time. Thanks so much for giving me the flower ideas as I was not sure what to plant!

Hi!
We loved doing this last year! This year I'm going to try a "Good Shepherd's Garden"! I'll let you know how that goes.
Just wanted to post a must have for your Mary garden though...Lamb's Ear! It doesn't need alot of care and boy does it grow! The kids have so much fun touching it too!!

I second the lamb's ear. I have it in my St. Francis garden. It's only been planted a few days and is already spreading well.

Helen, thank you for the link! It looks full of wonderful information! I'm going to check it out when I have some computer time later this afternoon. 
Charlotte, I would love to hear about your Good Shepherd's Garden ... what are your plans for that? And thank you for the lamb's ear suggestion. We just returned from an apple farm/nursery visit this morning and came home with lots of goodies for our fledgling Mary garden (I'm sure I'll be posting about it later  ). I didn't see lamb's ear there, but dh may be running out later to another nursery (because we are trying to find yellow violets!) so I will have him take a look ~ it sounds like a perfect plant for children.
Theresa, in a comment you left on my blog, you mentioned that Amazon won't ship Mary's Flowers till June. Barnes & Noble will ship in 2-3 days (see here).
In the meantime, I can list the varieties that are mentioned in the book. They don't seem to be assigned shade or sun, but you will probably know which ones need which. I can't type the list in now (the crowd is clamoring for lunch!), but will a.s.a.p.!

my lambs' ears in the old house got REALLY invasive. i heard someone say before you can't get rid of them! i do love those leaves though, and those dainty little flowers...
i made a mary garden chart showing Latin Name, ordering link if you like, Type (annual or perennial), Common Name , Religious Name, Height, Spacing, sun exposure, Color and Water needs last year when i was planning my garden. if anyone's interested let me know and i'll provide a link on the sidebar of my blog.

Theresa, this might give you a better idea of what Mary flowers need what kind of placement.

Yes, this is a good book, Dawn.
A couple months ago on the Mary garden site I saw reviews for this book also - Liturgy of Flowers in a Mary Garden. The reviews on the site sound good, but was wondering if anyone had read this one. It's more expensive so hoped to see it before I decided if it is a good one to get.

stef, i would love to see it as well. we are purchasing a plant for my son's FC (he picked roses - will they work?) and decided that we would love to make a mary garden for it. what a terrific idea!

i'll upload it in the morning and post the link here. sorry, wrong terminology, it's actually a spreadsheet -- so you can sort by sun exposure, or by height, or by water needs, etc.

Lots of neat ideas! After I research some more, I'll have a better idea of what the Good Shepherd garden would have. For now I'm thinking:
*Mustard Brassica - (Parable of the Mustard Seed)
*Caladium bicolor Caladium sp. (red) Heart of Jesus
*Caladium bicolor Caladium sp. (pink)) Heart of Mary
*Amaranthus Amaranthus Joseph' s Coat
*Lily-of-the-Valley Convallaria majalis Our Lady's Tears
*Lavender and/or Rosemary (Legend has it that Our Lady would wash Our Lord's clothing and lay it out to dry among these plants.
I think these are a part of the plan for now. My problem is, we have LOTS of shade. So I have to be careful of where and what I plant. More research is in order I think. So far though, our Mary garden is doing well that we started last year.
Of course, I am now in search of an outdoor Good Shepherd statue!
Looking forward to "hearing" more!

A good shade-loving plant is bleeding hearts. They might work well for your good shepherd garden.
