As I'm trying to get my liturgical year planning done early per this inspirational thread I am wondering: If this was your first year "officially" homeschooling (K and 1st plus a preschooler and toddler) and you were expecting a baby at the beginning of December...how would that affect your plans?

ummm....significantly!
I'd opt to:
:: really try to live and celebrate Sundays with significance and intention as the mini-Easters they are.
:: look to the major liturgical times of the year (Lent, Easter, Advent, Christmas) and choose some lovely picture books to read along with the seasons.
:: choose a very small handful of significant Solemnities and Feasts for the year to celebrate either through a simple teatime and picture book or very, very, very simple craft.
Anything more would be totally overwhelming to me! I'd fall back on picture books and some teatime afternoons really and that's it!

AMEN to what Jennifer said!
(plus it's a lot better than my first inclination, which was to respond: "I'd probably lay low until spring.")
prayers for a peaceful, productive school year and blessings on your pregnancy!

Good - I was planning on taking Thanksgiving - Epiphany off and extending our formal schooling into the summer.
I have not purchased Catholic Mosaic because *most* of the books are not at our library or in our home, yet. (We have 11 of the listed books; our library has an additional 6) I would like to add 2 books a month to our home library (with a fraction of the money we'll be saving on Catholic school tuition). Would it be worth it to buy the Catholic / Christmas Mosaic guides at this point or just work on reading books from the list(s) and getting familiar with the stories this year and purchasing the guides next year?
Alternatively, is there a "better" list for "must have" liturgical year picture books that I don't know about?

I think either option would be fine. Sometimes I use Cay's guides to dig into a book a little more, sometimes we take off on our own, and sometimes we just read the book. I think the answer to this question lies in your budget. If it's not stretching to purchase the guides, I would get them. I think they are very helpful and Cay has done so much work putting them together that they really are an aid. If, however, this would really stretch your budget, I'd wait.
Another idea is to ask your church library to purchase the books and the guides. Ask who is in charge of purchasing for your parish library. Often they are happy to have requests! This would be a great way to add to their library and make these lovely titles available to other families in the parish.

I do use Reading the Saints by Janet McKenzie for looking for books on specific saints. She has a lot of books listed in there, and what I love about her lists is that the listing is quite comprehensive - it includes in and out of print books. Sometimes, I can find a particular out of print book very inexpensively, sometimes I can't find a book in print on that saint (St. Dominic Savio comes to mind) and her book is a help in finding that there are books, just out of print and perhaps worth a hunt.
As far as readily assembled, coordinated with the liturgical year - I don't know anything as nice as Cay's Catholic Mosaic
