Happy Saint Francis Day to everyone.

My son is working on a project involving Saint Francis animal legends. He wants to cover as many species as possible. He has the most famous such as the wolf, the birds etc. He would esp. like to know of any involving insects, fish and reptiles or amphibians. Any with other mammals would be great also.

There is a story of St Anthony of Padua, who was one of the followers of St Francis, preaching to the fishes.

When we were in Assisi, we toured the portuncula. We talked to the current tour guide, a Franciscan brother. He told us a story about the doves. 2 doves live on the statue of St. F. These 2 doves are direct decendants of the 2 doves that orginally lived there with Francis. There is nothing that keeps them there, but they never leave.

Now about animals - but one of my faves. One day Francis thought that he was not suffering enough, and decided to throw himself onto a bed of roses. He was cut by the thorns, which promptly fell off. His blood stained the leaves of the roses. Those roses still exist at the portucula where he lived. They are still spotted with red on the leaves, they still have no thorns, and despite many people trying, those roses will not grow any other place in the world.

I love St. Francis.

Most of the legends of St. Francis are found in the book The Little Flowers of St. Francis which can be found online here.

I see he preached to the birds (and there's one of the paintings by Giotto in the Basilica that depicts that story), tamed doves, and the Wolf of Gubbio.

Interesting that it was St. Anthony and the fishes (that story is also in Little Flowers). I just read one of our picture books (I'll have to find the author) and he attributed that event to St. Francis in the book.
