Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My doc wants me to be gluten-free for the summer to see if my Fibromyalgia and immune system improve.

I went to daily Mass today, then freaked about the bread.

I am too embarrassed to ask my priest whether it is okay.

Does anyone else have this?

Thanks for any replies or suggestions.

Christy,
This thread discussed the topic a bit. My father-in-law has celiac disease and he still receives the host at communion. He can tolerate it. Many celiacs can't tolerate even the smallest amount of gluten and receive only the cup. There are several people here that will probably chime in with info.

Don't be worried about talking with your priest. This is something that priests have faced in recent times as it is becoming a more commonly diagnosed condition as are other wheat/gluten issues. They can make special arrangements for you to just receive the cup or use low-gluten hosts.

Here is the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops information on gluten and Holy Communion and a letter from then Cardinal Ratzinger.

Check out this site.

Every priest I have ever known has agreed to use these breads, reserved in a pyx for the recipient.

I fixed your link, Mary.

In our parish if a person is a celiac they talk to the priest beforehand and he will have a special chalice for the Precious Blood that only the person will use. They come up to receive communion from the cup before the communion is distributed to the people.

That's neat that these nuns were able to create low gluten hosts--they are wheat, but much of the gluten is removed.

I just wanted to note that there are other gluten free hosts sold that are NOT VALID for use in the Catholic Church. The hosts have to be made from wheat.

Jenn...

Thanks for fixing the link. I can't figure out what I have done that makes me unable to post clickable links. I suppose I must just rely on the generosity of the computer-literate to help me.

I cannot say enough good things about the Benedictine Sisters of the Perpetual Adoration and their dedication to the Eucharist.

Mary, Mary, and Jenn,
(((((Thankyou!!!))))

I will continue to receive while cutting all gluten out otherwise. If I continue to have problems, I will then talk to my priest.

All of the links were sooooo helpful-THANKYOU!!!

Warmly,
Christy

I'm not celiac but i am very sensitive to gluten. I only recieve the cup but only at Sunday Mass. During daily mass, here, there is only one cup and so a piece of the host is in there and i will react to even that.
