Hi everyone,
We will study middle ages with my dd coming up 13, this year.
we will be working through seton history, famous men of the middle ages and some readers in this time period.
I was wanting to do a project, that she would work on alone.
One of my friends is asking her dd to do kings and queens of England.
We have studied The Saints quite extensively, so I was looking more ideas.
Any ideas?
Leanne

Honestly, my first thought was, "Build a catapult!" But...there are many other things she could do.
She could choose a saint or a cathedral to profile (writing, illustrations, miracles, etc.).
She could read medieval poetry in translation and do a project based on that (you might have to pre-screen the poetry, depending on the author).
She could do a project on a specific pilgrimage site (Jerusalem, Rome, Mont Saint Michel, Compostela, etc.) and find out about modern-day pilgrimages.
And then there are arts and letters: stained glass, sculptures, architecture (cathedrals!), sacred writings, Gregorian chant....
Hey, can I do this project?
PS - My dd (almost 13) LOVES hands-on projects - she might choose illuminating manuscripts, calligraphy or something like that...

I remembered posting some of my bookmarked links to ideas for projects that we were considering for this period of history. I found it for you:

We did this in co-op, but I think you could have one child do it: researched the differences/changes in armor and weaponry with each century. Created a book with one knight from each century, illustrated (or traced) and labeled weapons and so forth. We then made life-sized renderings of them - very fun!

Since I enjoy geneology type of things.. learning more about the coat of arms would be cool.. the little I remember now I know that there were specific changes for particular people.. I think ladies had a particular shape for instance.. and others.. would combine as children married.. and I think first sons and second sons had changes on them.. things like that.

When I was in fifth grade, my teacher had us build a medieval village on a table. I still haven't forgotten the necessary features for a successful town: a crossroads, a river, and a hill for defense. This project also required research on what types of services were needed, such as a blacksmith, a miller, a wheelwright/carpenter, and serfs to farm. This is probably too extensive a project for one student, but I mention it because it was such a tremendous learning experience.

Oh, fun. It has that personality quiz I forgot about.
My favorite things to do for this period are calligraphy, illumination, and heraldry -- and stained glass. Here's the thread on some picture books

If you wanted a really girly idea, you could buy a tapestry kit.

I would have her make an icon using the instructions in A Brush with God. My kids and I did this last year and it was a very meaningful.
