Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Thank you for reading my post.

My oldest is nearing her fourth birthday so I am still in the very early days of all of this. I have been looking over the 4Real booklist and I would love to use it when my daughter reaches kindergarten age. We already have and read many of the books on the K-2 booklists. Does this mean I will need to find substitutes when we are using the booklist? Will using books we are already familiar with detract from the experience when the time comes? It may seem like I am jumping the gun by asking now but I'd like to either know if I will need to do more planning to find substitute titles or if I should pull some of the listed books off our shelves to save for later. Pulling age-appropriate picture books from the shelves seems a little silly though.

I have a friend who is reading the "Little House" series to her four-year-old and says he is loving them. Do you think I would be wise to hold off for several more years until these books would have more meaning for my daughter or is there no harm in reading them now and again later?

Thank you for any advice!

Jordan, most of the books are grouped by theme or season, making it easy to substitute. You will end up tweaking it to suit your family anyway.

However if you are nervous about starting out and want a plan to follow this is a good one and it won't hurt to put the books away till you are ready for more schoolish work. There are plenty of other good ones to enjoy till then.

Jordan, It probably depends on your children. My oldest and I read all of the Narnia books when he was 5. He just ate them up and kept asking for more. My second son will be 7 soon and is not quite ready for them. We have read ahead on the booklist and then re-read them again according to the guideline. My kids love doing this, especially with those that are favorites.

Bridget & Rebecca,

Thank you for your replies. It sounds like you're saying that it would be okay to either substitute new books later or for now, put aside the listed books we already have. In that case, it will probably be best for me to do some of each, depending on the book.

Thanks so much,
Jordan

Does anyone have any thoughts on beginning early with a more advanced preschooler? Would 4 1/2 be considered early?

Thanks for any input.

That is one of the beauties of homeschooling: you can give your child what she is ready for. No, 4 1/2 is not too early at all.

Your already doing read alouds. Find the location of the story on a map. Have her narrate the story back to you if she is a talker. Type and print it if you want. Maybe she would like to illustrate it. Gather several books on a theme and make a lap book together. Find the letter 's' as many times on a page as you can together. Count the itmes in a picture. The ideas are endless. Just don't push her in formal schooling at this age. Follow her lead.

Bridget,

Thank you for your great ideas. I think these types of things would work for my dd. I keep wanting to create little units for her but I haven't followed through on anything yet.

Thanks again. Jordan
