Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My husband and I have been reviewing our school year so far and have had some conversations about the next school year. My three older dc (organized by dd 10 - the ringleader) came to us last week and told us that they had decided what they wanted to do for school next year - no set curriculum or workbooks, but a series of unit studies and rabbit trails. Here is some of what they proposed:

1) Second World War - they even had some favorite books and field trips listed. (The more I have thought about this the more excited I have become about it - and have started drafting a unit study which I will post)

2)Geology - I have rock hounds

3)Electricity - I have circuit fans too

4) Baseball (boys)

5) Gardening - organic vegetables and herbs in wading pools

6) Sewing and cooking (dd)

7) Religion through saint stories, daily prayers and devotions, following the Liturgical year, Blessed Mother Notebook, Catholic Mosaic. They also want to do a Pope John Paul II unit study

8) Horizon Math ("if we have to do Math")

9) Latin - Lingua Angelica

10) Lots of nature walks and outdoor field trips

11) Music from ballets (dd)

12) Spanish - visit Costa Rica (I do not think this will happen next year!!)

Hmm - I've got to start thinking about how to incorporate the above into MY school plans!!

That sounds like an ideal plan to me! Wow! They really thought this through! I have found that letting my dc choose the subject matter and manner of learning (projects, unit studies, etc)has really been successful in our homeschool. Though I still guide the details, the enthusiasm all comes from the child when the subject is dear to their hearts.

Marilyn,

Wow! What a neat thing for your children to come to you with such substance. The Pope John Paul II unit is a terrific idea! Are you really going to Costa Rica? I'm half Costa Rican, was born in San Jose, and used to summer there as a kid for several years! I bet it has changed!

I love it! Good for them! That sounds like a great plan all on its own. I know, us moms and our plans.

Thank you all for your replies. I am having fun thinking about some of the things - especially the WW2 unit - I will post my unit study once done. Maybe I need to start a blog to put all my plans on - just seems a little daunting right now with the hyperemesis - though from Elizabeth's email about blog it should be fairly easy to do. I will look at the blog once I have done our taxes - not my favorite thing in the world.
