I would dearly love to announce to my 13 yo birthday boy that the notebook topic for May is Star Wars. What would a Star Wars notebook include?

FWIW, Paul is not seeing the new film. Reviews have it pegged as PG-13, nearly R for violence. We will preview it before we let the others see it, too.
Ah, but the notebook? In my house, it would have to be 3-d, with characters flipping out of the notebook as pages are opened.

am not keeping up with posts because of health hassles but my sixteen year old saw the name of the thread and was interested.
Here are some suggested activities that you and your ds may be able to use as a starting point for ideas. BTW, the Stage 3 level mentioned in the text is an approx Grade 6 level.

Hi! This is my first time posting in this forum (I love it by the way!). We are into our second year of homeschooling our 8, 5 and 3 year old.
I just have to ask, when did your boys watch Star Wars? My 8 year old has NEVER seen any of them. We have been very careful of what the kids watch, and many times I feel like...well...a ninny for not allowing Star Wars!! I just don't like getting caught up in the hype of these shows. Yet, for an 8 year old boy- isn't he still young for those types of movies/shows?
Any thoughts? Thanks!

Good question, Charlotte! I would love to know as well as my 6 year old ds keeps asking. Probably only because his cousins have seen it (them?). We're also very strick (I hate to use that word!) about movies, sticking mostly to G-rated ones for now. I figure they can watch all the PG ones (the really good ones) later. Anyway....back to Star Wars........????

My oldest child didn't see Star Wars until he was 13. My second child saw it with him at 9. I'm afraid that such has been the case in several instances where younger children in our large family have done things far earlier than their big siblings, simply because they HAVE big siblings. That said, no one under 13 is going to see the new one and we've really reined in on DVDs and such. The little ones don't seem to have benefitted from earlier exposure. On the contrary, it is a regret of mine.
However, I asked about this particular project for a young teenager and I think it would be right up his alley.

My dh just received the first three (or I should say the original three) films on DVD for his birthday. There was a bonus DVD in the box called "Empire of Dreams" I was only half-watching, but it went into how Lucas came up with these ideas- authors, books, stories, and films that inspired him. Also, it went alot into the founding of ILM-Industrial Light and Magic-who are responsible for the special effects. They have the bonus disc at mentura.com if you're a member there (I think it's called family pass, now). My dh loves Star Wars and my almost 6 yo can't wait for her 10th birthday so they can watch it together!!

Me again
The bonus disc also talked about the "studio system" of making movies and the millions of dollars involved. Might take some of the fun out of it-but your son could research all the money spent on these movies-is it worth it?

You might also include some study of the role of religion in the Star Wars script. I haven't really studied the issue, but I seem to remember reading that while SW seems to represent a classic battle of Good VS Evil, that it also is somewhat Gnostic in its tenor. Gosh, where did I read that? Maybe it was in the Micheal O'Brien book, "Landscape with Dragons"? Hmmmm. Anyway, it might provide some interesting mental fodder for your older student (and incorporate Religion into the lapbook!!!)

I've sort of evolved to this method. The England notebook and the Pope notebooks went so well that I decided to see how it works to have them choose a topic and notebook for a month. Sometimes, the are certain things I want to study (like the Pope) and it makes sense for us all to do the same thing and for me to plot the course more than less. But right now, there are no agenda items and it seems there's no reason not to let them pick something they'd like to pursue...I'll let you know how it goes

Well, I am happy to be on the forums tonight. My dh is out of town for business. My 6 yr. old nephew is begging me to take him to the new Star Wars. I guess the answer will have to be no. He will probably be the only one in his class not to go see it. Oh, well...I couldn't see many movies or watch the popular tv shows when I was little either.

When did the first, very, very first installment of Star Wars come out?? 1978?
How old were you all when you first saw the first 3?
We let my 7 yo see the very oldest episode recently, but we screened all the more violent scenes. He was suitably in awe of the whole experience.
The new ones are more violent, no? And don't they deal with more 'emotional' issues than the old ones?
My husband and I was just discussing this issue this weekend. We are quite strict about movies, and pleased to be so. Never feel guilty about being an overprotective parent! Overprotective parents Unite!

My Mom would just love you so! She never cared that anyone thought she was overprotective or strict. We did see the first three Star Wars when we were little.
Even know she gets mad at me if I mentioned I saw some movie or show she doesn't approve of or like!
I just wish these latest Star Wars were not so violent or dark, but I guess that is how the story goes. I am looking forward to seeing it. Of course, I will probably have a three year old sitting in front of me like when I saw Spiderman!

I soooo know what you are saying! My husband and I fume through movies when people bring their 3-5 yrolds to films that are waaayy to much for them.
Still, the original 3 have so much merit as 'just plain exciting' movies for kids say 8 and up at our house(just IMO) I remember loving them to excess. BTW, I still have all my original toys! They are very well used and my kids squealed when they first saw them, broken parts and all.
Part of the innocence and fun (the pagentry (sp?), heroism and gallantry?) has been lost in the second 3 movies. I just can't love them. However, I betcha lots of kids these days really do! Kids are truly more sophisticated these days. (do we have an 'old fogy' icon?)
