Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I know many of us keep a blog as a type of online journal or scrapbook.    My extended family likes to visit mine, and a few friends. (and you ladies here are so kind to peek in too!)

I've also been keeping another blog specific to homeschooling. Tracking progress of each child, notes of what they have said, lots and lots of pictures of what they have done and pics of while they are doing things. My older kids add their work to it themselves. I often have them write on the blog rather than a notebook when it comes to narrations, book reports, and essays. I thought that I could scan in artwork and drawings also. Then I wouldn't have to keep all the "hard copies".    I figure I could print this out at the end of the year and take it to their assesments. I don't think I could replace it with their paper portfolios, but maybe eventually it could, that would save me so much paperwork stacked up.

Has anyone done this? Think it's a good idea/bad idea?

I forgot to add tha I keep this password protected.

I think it is a great idea. An IRL homeschool friend is currently taking a class to learn about digital portfolios. I am anxiously awaiting the end of the course in December and the final verdict as she is the one who evaluates our portfolios. Ideally I want to scan everything in, Math papers, tests, project photos, you name it, I want to digitize it! Then I would like to simply hand her a CD and let her go at it in May. See, I don't want to print it out at the end of the year, I just want one CD for each year. Wouldn't that be fabulous?

I would think this would depend on the state you are in and that state's requirements. I'll be watching this thread to see other's replies!

Lisbet,

i would love to do something like this, I was thinking of it actually when I started my blog but then went another direction.    How do you go about finding a service provider that will give password protection?

I really, really like the description of yours. I would like to do something similar.

This was the reason I started my blog. To have a record of the books we read, and documentation (written and photos) of what we are doing. At the end of the month, I just printed out the archive and filed it away for record-keeping. Now, I live in Texas and the homeschooling laws are very lenient. I am not required to turn in any formal records, so the blog archive and my lesson plans are pretty thorough for a homeschooling Texan.

My typepad account allows me to make my blog public or private. I don't know if that's a regular feature on all blogs, but with my subscription I can have up to 3 blogs and I have the option with any of them to be public or private.

I set up the blog at blogspot to automatically email our weekly posts to my rep. at a charter school. This works well for us. The blog is public, but I don't put up photos or personal info. This way we can both share and report without duplication of effort.

I put family pictures elsewhere -- at flickr, where you can control the level of privacy for your pictures (even individually).

It is a great idea for assesments.

The school district my mom works for completely switched from paper portfolios to online ones. The kids get a cd of work at the end of each grade. The parents like them too.

The kids and teachers each choose a sample of each type of work once a month to scan/save.

If your state has formal assesments i think they would have their socks knocked off if you were that organized
