Hi,

I have been wondering for a while now, which Bible you advocate using, or you use?
I know that CM uses the KJV for it's beautiful language, but as a Catholic, I'm in a quandry as to which version we should use.

Any suggestions?

At Franciscan University of Steubenville, Dr. Scott Hahn really encouraged the RSVCE -- Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition. Make sure it is the Catholic edition. That is the most accurate translation. That's what I use the most.

But I also have several other translations available, (which is also recommended by Dr. Hahn) to get a feel of the passage. Usually one text can be translated many ways. So I have the old Confraternity edition (Douay-Rheims), New American Bible (do not like this one), Jerusalem Bible (not the New, that one is awful), and even the old Ronald Knox translations of the Bible. Doing side by side comparisons is quite interesting. One translation I don't have is KJV, which I guess I should add for comparison.

This is how I decide on recipes...I have several versions and pick and choose which ingredients I like best, and sometimes combine. Probably some psychological disorder...but you could also say I am definitely using my books!

I did get the Electronic Bible version of the Douay-Rheims... and also the E version of the KJV with apocrypha.

I really like this article from Catholic Answers about Bible translations. It discusses many different translations and thoughts on what you are using the translation for as to which might be most useful in that situation. Excellent summary.

Why don't you like the New American Bible? That is the one I use mainly because when I decided to get a Bible in English that is the one my dh used. Now his Bible is falling apart and he doesn't want to get a New American Bible again because we heard it has inclusive language. Is that true?
What about the one published by Ignatius? what translation is it?

Yes, it's true. NAM is full of inclusive language. Very watered down translations.

Ignatius prints the RSVCE.

If I have time I'll track down where and what I've heard about the different translations. One good way for you to distinguish is find the passage in Luke Chapter 1, vs. 28 when the Angel Gabriel visits Mary. Bad translations have phrases like "Rejoice, O highly favoured daughter." No, it's supposed to be "Hail, full of grace." It's a very important doctrinal issue here...Mary was conceived without sin, full of grace.

Oh, almost forgot! The other great translation is the Navarre Bible. Actually, it's the RSVCE and New Vulgate translation, but what's great is the commentary. Very solidly Catholic. The problem is they haven't made a carryable Bible, since the commentaries have so much to say. But really worthwhile!

I never did like my New American Bible...

now I know why!
Now if only I could read Latin

... I am definitely going to look into the others...
BTW I heard Pope Benedict XVI thinks that Ignatius Press is very good
