Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Cincinnati hosts an event called Tall Stacks every few years. Its a gathering of steamboats and lots of activities based around the steamboat/U.S. Civil War era (reenactments, costumed interpreters, etc.).

I've never been but am excited about taking my kids this year.

My oldest will be 5 and I'm hoping someone has some great suggestions for picture books we can read about this era to help him understand what we will see...
steamboats?
Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn adaptations?
1840's and 1850's games and home life?
Civil war (he may be a bit too young for much of this)?
Perhaps the underground railroad?

any ideas?

Also, if anyone is interested, info about this event is at www.tallstacks.com

Looking forward to your suggestions... and many thanks in advance.

Erica

Here is a smattering of random thoughts....

How about the free download from Living Books for the Ears This week the show is Tom Sawyer! Here is some Mark Twain bio info mark Twain House and Museum
Tom Sawyer paper doll

I learned this today:
“Mark Twain was a lifelong creator and keeper of scrapbooks. He took them with him everywhere and filled them with souvenirs, pictures, and articles about his books and performances. But in time, he grew tired of the lost glue, rock-hard paste, and the swearing that resulted from the standard scrapbook process. So, he came up with the idea of printing thin strips of glue on the pages to make updates neat and easy to do. In 1872, he patented his “self-pasting” scrapbook, and by 1901, at least 57 different types of his albums were available. It would be his only invention that ever made money.”
