Well...
I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but school was canceled for the term during The Long Winter, and when Laura was teaching for the Brewster school, there was one day when Mr. Brewster made her stay home; he went to the schoolhouse, lit the stove and came back, saying it was too cold for anyone to stay at school.
(Yes, I own all the books, and yes, I reread them every year!)

And those kids that were far out walked a WHOLE MILE. Even in our small town, the elementary school is further than that. What you can do over a small distance can be drastically reduced by very little distance and what you can walk in, you can't drive modern vehicles.

I'm a fan of the series because the Ingalls family had enormous faith in God, even when they could not attend church; they valued education, whether or not they could get to school; they worked hard but found immense enjoyment in music, family meals, nature's beauty and reading aloud (or reciting poetry) to each other...when I'm frustrated by too much snow (for me, any snow is too much snow! ), I pull out one of the books and remind myself that I'm trying to do the same things for my children that Ma did for hers.
There are times when, like Ma, I have to hold down the fort and do "Pa's" chores, too, because my husband is doing his Navy job elsewhere. Ma's cheerful example is a big help to me. (And my daughter plays the fiddle...what a blessing her music is!)

I have no doubt we are wimpy, but I don't think this proves it. Going to school is not worth risking your life, and with thousands of cars on icy roads, it is dangerous. My kids would love to walk a mile through fresh snow, as long as it wasn't a blizzard

And the littlest children would have been kept home in bad weather. Even up to my grandmother's time. hmmm she was born in 1922. When I started homeschooling, she was completely fine with it, asked me some questions, but I found that she had been homeschooled at times because of the weather when she was small. Even if the bigger kids weould be going to school.
