Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi!

We're in a unique situation whereas my dd who was HS'd up too and including Grade 6, went to a Catholic School for Grade 7, and has asked to return to being HS'd for Grade 8.

She claims she is now motivated, and is looking forward to her upcoming school year.

I am both and    I can do this.

In the past, she excelled at Teaching Textbooks for Math...but I am honestly overwhelmed as to what to teach her for Grade 8.

It is going to have to be work she can do individually, as we have 8 children (a baby and a busy 4 year old still reside at home, the others are at our local Catholic School).

She has asked not to do Seton this time around. She is very visual, and does well with hands-on work.

I'm curious as to what curriculum you found worked well for your 13 year old in the subjects of Language, History and Science please.

Thank you!

In 8th grade here I do what I call a science survey. They spend about 4/6 weeks on a particular topic and then do a project at the end. I changed these based on the child's interests. We've done entomology, CSI (there's some great books for kids on this topic that I got from the library), chemistry, electronics, and others...just ask her what she likes, gets some books, look for some investigations she can do, and then make a project or report.

For history we do civics from alpha omega. This is a full year curriculum and has readings, daily questions, and exams.

We do teaching textbooks algebra.

Last year my 8th grader did the one year adventure novel which went well although he is still needing to finish it. This was part of English as well as daily grams for grammar and lots of essays. He had essays to write for civics and then I had him to others on various topics. We always do several literature reads as well.

I then do topics that the kids are interested in like desktop publishing, intro to computers.

As a family we all work on geography and at 8th grade they are still in the group science we do which covers botany, zoology, human body. This is where I read/discuss with them the topics and we do nature walks and projects together. We do music and art together too still in 8th grade.

It seems that in 8th my boys just need to have everything spelled out...do this, this, and this, and have it done by this time. They like to work on their own schedule; but, can get distracted easily and so need the guidelines. Maybe this is just a boy thing though.

Good luck!

Have you looked at any on-line courses she could take that would still hold her accountable but ease up your need to be so hands-on? Particularly math.

You could also consider what she has taken and look ahead as to what will be required for high school and that should help you at least narrow down more specifics for these subject areas.

Hope that helps...good luck!
