Don't you love it when you leave something lying around for your kids to discover and they run with it?
I've left out a couple of history and science books lately that were quietly taken away and read
I also left out our Carnival of the Animals book and cd (which we've had for several years) and it had new life and has been much enjoyed.
I just wish I could come up with some fun math items to strew around!

We have one of the books in this series Extreme Dot to Dot that my big kids LOVE! While it doesn't particularly address math skills (aside from counting up) it seems to really help DS focus and concentrate and I hope that's helping those skills.

I really wish my kids would! I just end up picking it and putting it away a few weeks later as it was left untouched.

Last week, the eye doctor told me to buy some dot-to-dot books to help one of my sons with tracking issues. I know what book I am getting.

I got out our matching game. North America Wildlife Memory Card Game. There's 50 pairs of animals. I only use all 50 if it's the big kids playing.
But I do think that type of mind game helps with any thinking skills including math.

Jodie, that's fantastic! I'm getting one for my special needs son. He really has challenges in spatial memory and the games we have are just getting too "young" for him to really enjoy--and the goofy pictures are not my style! This one is lovely, and great for all ages!

Bummer! Went to the Animal Game link and it was identified as an "untrusted site". Do you think it is safe, Jodie? I found the game on Amazon, but for $74! Yikes!

My link was to the Yellowstone assoc. gift shop type of page, seemed safe enough. It's generally sold through the gift shops of the National Parks and Rec. Areas. So if you have one nearby, I'd check that out and save on shipping.

Don't be discouraged... I've had my share of hits and misses
No matter how often I bring out the Wedgits, for example, my dc just don't seem interested.
Jodie- my dd loves memory games and animals. Thanks for the tip about this one!

Sometimes I think kids might need some modeling on strewn objects. Put it out and then a day or two later, you pick it up and share it with the kids.
Make sure that you're putting things where the kids will discover them. Like a basket of books that they use, they'll notice new books in there. Where if the book was left sitting out they might leave it alone because it's "not theirs".
In my case we've had the game for a while but with the toddlers I have to keep it put up or lose cards (literally or to destruction). So I pull it down and ask if anyone wants to play and I play a game with them. Then they ask for the game on their own for a while. If the game stops being picked up like it should and given back, I just put it away again for a while.
So if leaving things out doesn't make them interesting. You might try introducing them to the kids in a relaxed way.. and sharing it with the kids and then leaving it accessible and see if they don't pick it up themselves.

First, thank you for recommending these books, Kathryn. My one son now has two and really likes them. I just noticed that Amazon is currently selling Animals, Animals 2, and Sports for $3.74 which is a great price. These books keep my energetic son busy for a long time.

Books by Chris Van Dusen have been a hit here. We were introduced to his handiwork with the illustrations of the Mercy Watson series. His "If I Built a Car" and "If I Built a House" books have inspired quite a lot of drawing and imaginative discussion, especially among those in single digit ages.

This is for much older kids, but my teenagers have been passing around "Tattooes on the Heart." I picked it up the last time I was at the Los Altos Maryknoll House. It has some language in it, but it is so inspiring! It is about a priest who moves to LA to reach out to gang members. So good!

kackyK,
I know I mentioned it, but do be aware there is bad language. However the language is all in context, so while I am generally against bad language...I feel like in this particular instance it makes the book ring true to the culture.
One of the things I love about this book is that the priest (it is written from his point of view) never blames God and never despairs. He is genuine about not understanding sometimes, and about being sad, but he always sees with the eyes of mercy and compassion and he always sees blessings in places that are not obvious.
My middle son in particular has really been impacted by the point of view in this book. The change in his outlook is quite remarkable. Teenage years had started to make him somber about the pain in this world. This book has helped him to regain the joyful attitude and trust in God's mysterious plan that characterized his childhood.
Ah, I could go on forever!
Blessings,

Strewing works so well here. I check out library books and they find the books and read them. I put some in their rooms, on the shelves, and they always seem to "find" them.
One of the latest was The World of the Trapp Family which I put out when the last of the original 7 children died (Maria). I've been a really lifelong fan of the Trapp family, but the real thing, not the Sound of Music version.
I was just tickled to hear my son spouting off information about the family. I asked where he read that...and then he told me it was the book I gave him. "You didn't think I would read it, did you?"

For the Easter baskets I included Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land which has spurred on checking out Lewis Carroll's books.
