I want to take a poll. My kids enjoy reading, but they give me a hard time on the amount of reading I have them do in school. I think they need to be doing double of what they are doing now. I thought I would take a poll to see what everyone else is doing.
I have ds 12 and ds 8(almost 9!) and they each read 15-30 minutes combined for school each day. How about you?

DD (now 15) has always read ALOT! I can't tell you how long! In 2nd grade she read through all the old Nancy Drews. But she is my exception. My now 10 year old ds now reads - outside of school - 1 chapter per day of whatever he is reading (currently Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nihm). So very little. Barb

For school (This does not count read aloud time - this is independent reading only.)
16 yo (going into 12th grade) - reads 4 - 5 hours/daily
12 yo (going into 8th grade) - reads 3 - 4 hours/daily
8 yo (going into 4th grade) - reads about 1 hour daily
Free reading time
No clue! They each read independently in the evenings, and sometimes in the afternoon.

Because of the nature of unschooling, where I do not require specific reading assignments or time/amounts, the time spent reading each day varies widely.
However, on average I would say my dd (age 11) reads 1-2 hours or so per day on topics related to her projects/interests of a more schooly nature.
She also reads about 3 hours or more/day purely for pleasure (rough estimate here as I don't really keep track of that).

I don't keep super-careful track . . . but my 15-year-old 9th grader reads easily 4-5 hours a day for school, plus more for his own pursuits. My 10-year-old read assigned books for about an hour this year; but he reads voraciously, all the time, and I don't draw clear lines between school and everything else. My 9-year-old has been my struggling reader, and the only one of my children who does not devour books for pleasure. She's up to about 40 minutes of assigned independent reading daily, which is a huge triumph.

My 8 year old (almost 9) probably reads 90 minutes for school (4 days a week), and he reads a lot in his free time. No clue how long. Often he takes a book outside with him, so some days his hours are spent reading while others are spent fort-building and bird watching, and I couldn't begin to guess how much.
I will point out, though, that the bulk of ds's schoolwork IS the reading. We are doing Life of Fred for math, so, his math is reading. Right now, he has copywork, Explode the Code, Latin, German Learnables, and some end of the year catch-up math work in learning/practicing multiplication tables, but the rest of his school work is the reading itself.
Just clarifying that I don't require that kind of reading on top of other history/science/religion assignments, and we are not doing any other programs for subjects like grammar or an involved spelling program like AAS. He probably spends 3-3 1/2 hours a day on schoolwork total, and roughly half of that time is spent reading.

My oldest, 18 and graduating, reads all day. He reads at least 3 hours for school, and lots for pleasure.
My dd 15, graduating next year, hasn't picked up a book since March (except Shakespeare and science and math textbooks, oh and her spiritual reading)! She is completing a spring chemistry class at the university, dances professionally, acts in two Shakespeare troupes and has done the wardrobe for two plays in the last two months! She is a doer and reading slows her down. She is in eye therapy and dyslexic so that plays into it. She listens to a lot of audiobooks and does love literature.
Ds 12 loves to read, but also loves to play with his brother the doer (ds10). He reads about 1 1/2 hours max for school (usually less) and then reads in bed at night and sometimes in the day.
Ds 10, reluctant reader, reads for about 45 min a day.
My kids all do math for at least 45 min. a day and my dd15 takes more like 2 hours a day. They also study latin and play instruments- the amount of reading I give them works with what they are doing while leaving some margin for their pursuits.

Oh - just saw you want how much they read during school! I don't keep track but for my 10 year old - if we don't really read his text books together anymore - he does that himself.

This has been helpful! Thanks everyone for sharing! My dc will be reading this post too. We were moving through books so slow and I have a even bigger list for next year. They need to realize that my expectations aren't that bad and I think they will see that when they can read this post to see how much other kids are reading. Their free reading is a completely different story! I don't have to push at all on that.

My children echo Lindsay and Jen. Reading is the bulk of our schoolwork, so we do about 60-90 minutes of reading, sometimes more.
But then my older son 9 is reading all the time. He is a voracious reader, like Lindsay's. He's never without a book. He is just now finishing the Lord of the Rings trilogy...and he started last week around Wednesday or Thursday.

No way! DS1 just started those recently, too, and read most of The Two Towers on Friday when he was sick with a cold. I wish we lived closer. He would love a like-minded playmate his age.

I would love having a like-minded mommy near me, too!
When he started the first book, I walked by him and he stopped and gave a huge sigh of contentment. Of Tolkien, he asked me: "How did he imagine all these things?"
He's dying to talk about his reading! It IS nice to have like-minded friends.

My two 6yos are both strong readers; they do maybe 30 minutes of reading for schoolwork (they just finished first grade with AO Year 1, so it was a light courseload), and then hours of extra reading "for fun."
