Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What book(s) would you read if you wanted to do some reading on CM education? I have read Karen Andreola and even a little of CM original books (I have these but I don't know which I should read). I really want to do some reading that would help with an atmosphere of education in our home. I also would like more information on living books. I really want to read something that will inspire me for the start of our new school year. Any suggestions?

I know others who are more CM experts will be able to impart wisdom here, but my two cents on what was helpful to me. I like to read broadly, to really understand the philosophy of what I'm doing, and also the practical nuts and bolts of how to implement.

Jenny King's Charlotte Mason Reviewed is a very small but concise and power-packed volume summarizing CM so well. That is a great jump start. You can order it for $8.00 from here.

When Children Love to Learn: A Practical Application of Charlotte Mason's Philosophy for Today is my favorite. It's written by different authors, and it's really practical and quite inspiring.

Further short reading that is inspiring and practical are the three books by Catherine Levison, A Charlotte Mason Education, More Charlotte Mason Education, A Literary Education.

And reading Charlotte Mason is of course, really super helpful. Her Volume 6 Towards A Philosophy Of Education is where to begin, because it sums up her complete philosophy. But it is rich, so slower to trudge through.

I'm going to list some other resources that might be helpful:

Sonya Shafer's Simply Charlotte Mason has loads. Her recorded seminars are wonderful. Her books are super practical, and were very helpful for me to get a kickstart.

Ambleside Online has quite a library including some of the old P.N.E.U. articles.
Penny Gardner
Linda Fay, Higher Up and Further In
Sage Parnassus
Childlight USA also has some online recordings from past conferences.
and of course, our own Jen Mackintosh with her new blog with all her downloads.

And if you made this far, this is REALLY fantastic. It's not reading, but the videos from Ambleside International will really inspire you in creating an atmosphere. These are like a personal conference...all for free.

When Children Love to Learn is my favorite as well.

And if you haven't read For the Children's Sake, I think it is good.

I got this book from the library once, but wasn't able to get it read. I completely forgot about it.

I pulled at A Philosophy of Education to start. The originals overwhelm me, but I will see if I can make sense of it.

If you can have a friend read the originals with you to discuss each chapter...you would do well. I'm in a group with four other moms and it's really neat to share. We've also read the Andreola book together and the Levison books.    There are plenty of great helpers here to walk you through too! Enjoy. It's a treasure trove!
