Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 5.5yr son has been obsessed with trains since he was 19 months old, and he's showing no signs of losing interest any time soon. He loves Usborne's The Story of Trains. Until now we've mostly just read story picture books, but he's ready to learn a bit more. I'm looking for Living resources. I don't mind having one or two reference books that list the different trains and facts about them, but I don't want those to be his only options. Still, I would love some recommendations on which of those are the better ones. He is capable of sitting and listening to short chapters books, and is in between the K and 1st grade levels, but I don't mind getting some things that are too advanced for him to set back for later. We do take him to some train museums, and he's been on two short train rides.

Oh, brings back so many memories. 5 year old boys and trains!!! Have you seen the thread I started in the picture book forum? I know you said you are looking beyond picture books but several I have listed there are more advanced and cover trains and railroads in greater detail (as well as great historical train stories) - not just a cute picture book story. That is one place for some recommendations.

Trains & Railroads

And I'll get back to you with more ideas when I get a chance as I'm out the door right now.

The DVD "All About Trains for Kids" is wonderful and has a living book read by the author in sections through out the DVD. The DVD is a favorite here but the book on it's own would make a great living book study that could tie into so many curriculum areas.

The title is "A Lucky Dog, Owney U.S. Rail Mail Mascot" by Dirk Wales It is based on a true story of a young dog adopted by the US Postal Service who rode baggage cars across the country collecting metals on a special jacket.

It would be very fun to get or download a collection of railroad songs to play. There is some really fun music associated with trains - folk music like Wabash Cannonball, Casey Jones, or City of New Orleans.

One source I really like for folk music is Smithsonian Folkways - here is a railroad collection

Also found this collection.
