Could some of you ladies who use both of these help me see how you mix the 2? I used to use FIAR and then changed to CHC and then used B4FIAR with my little ones..but could never figure out how to do both.
This year I will have a 5th grader, 4th and 1st and I plan to mostly use CHC but also want to add in FIAR still. If you have dc in those grades or ages (10,8 and 6) could you share an example of what you have planned for each day?
Thanks! I have really learned a lot from this forum and this is my first post besides my intro!

Hollee,
Sorry that I don't have an answer for you, but I'm bumping this thread, hoping someone might share some ideas. I missed it when you posted.
I would love to know how others combine a more structured plan (like CHC) with their rabbit trails/unit studies (like FIAR). We do our more structured table time in the am, and I always hope to do the more fun unit stuff in the afternoons, but we never seem to get to it. Everyone goes their separate ways after lunch, and I'm too tired to regroup. I feel like we're missing out on a lot and our learning seems very reductive, which I don't like one bit.
Do you do structured studies and units on the same days? Or do you have different days or seasons for each? If we break from the structured stuff, I worry about the continuity---maybe that's an area where I need to let go.

Hollie,
I don't really have an answer for you because I haven't done it yet. But, I do plan to do something similar this coming year. I will have a 5th, 3rd, 1st and Ker plus a high schooler, a toddler and a newborn.
My 5th will be doing the CHC lesson plans mostly. which really means doing the workbooks and the history. We have apologia science that she will also do. From there, I will try to do FIAR with her and the rest of the kids and just keep it really light and hopefully fun! My high schooler will probably be doing Seton and he will be using most of my energy as he is not the most willing student.
So, in short , we will just use the CHC workbooks and outline to cover the basics while getting more together time with FIAR. Of course, this is all theory at the moment!

Thanks Diane and Molly for answering!
Diane,
I am not getting to FIAR and it is bugging me! We do our table work in the morning and usually it drags into the afternoon as we go to noon Mass and then eat at 1 after we get home and then all of a sudden it is 2:30 and I'm beat! By then the kids need to get outside or do chores or something and I have not gotten to FIAR.

When I did those types of programs, I found that it worked better for me to do the more involved (fun) things like projects, read alouds, lapbooks, etc in the mornings when I have more energy, and let the kids do more independant stuff (like workbooks) in the afternoon. It also helped that the littles were napping at that time and the older kids could concentrate better. Perhaps you could try switching your schedule around to FIAR in the am, CHC in the pm?

I don't know how I missed this; this is what we do! I find that CHC in the FAIR aged years is plenty light enough to leave room for rowing. We don't alway sstick to FIAR as written; I often expand the units and I frequently do lapbook or notebook projects. CHC before 5th grade leaves lots of open space for the full cadre of Real Learning: nature study afternoons, picture study a la CM (though there is art appreciation offered with CHC, even literature-based unit study. For instance, when the CHC geography is a trip around the world, looking at countries, just match the FIAR volumes to the CHC country. You'll have a much more complete study.
I think Theresa is right. Don't relegate FIAR to "when everything else is finished." The workbooks really are low energy; they work beautifully for quiet afternoons. Kick off the day with rabbit trails.
