Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My ten yr old dd has decided that she has an interest in politics and current affairs. We all know that the newspaper is a dangerous and scandelous place to let a child roam freely. What other sources can I offer her? We have tried God's World News but it isn't "meaty" enough for her. Today she asked to read Rush Limbaugh's books that I have on the shelf. I haven't read them in years and really don't know if it would be appropriate for her. I know I often have to turn down his show because the topics become inappropriate.

Is there another periodical that has more substance but still avoids the more seedy stories? I hate to squash an interest but I want to protect her innocence.

Like you have all the time in the world , but an idea that I had was what if you could peruse a few internet articles, print them out and she could have at them?

You would know what she's reading and then you could have some great discussions...

Just a thought....

If this is a big interest, Molly, you could set up a specific lesson for her each day, as Maria mentioned, getting the stories together that you feel appropriate for her age and sensitivity level.

You can even print out pieces of articles or quotes, etc. from the internet to discuss them. She could even write paragraphs that are editorials about her views on these things, or Venn Diagrams on different issues with different sides.

You could put it all into a wonderful Current Events/World News binder notebook with printed articles, maps, etc. It would be a really neat project for her!

Here's a neat website I have in my favorites to use for current events that may help you some:
Kids Newsroom There are even printer friendly versions of the stories, to make it easier for you.

Here are a few other websites I found that might help you with this type of a project:

Earthweek

current events unit

EconEdlink

CNN Student News

Newsweek Education

Choices Program

Newshour PBS current events

Homework Spot current events

Time for Kids

Scholastic News Zone

Student News Net

Education World current events links and reviews (this one has many of the sites I had already put here, when I came across it) Very convenient, and reviews some of them as well.

Mr. Donn's Propaganda lesson plan

News sources website

USA Today Education

Wowsa site!

I hope these help some, Molly. There are always biases of course in every news organization, and opinions vary, etc. which I know you know. But I'm not sure with these sites where they're coming from politically, etc. I just wanted to give the warning. If I hear of anything more of what you're looking for, I'll definitely post about it.
