Her emphasis that CM cannot be in a box also implied that her approach is so individual. Not even child to child will look alike.

Great article- thanks for linking.

I know I tend to judge narration as a "were you listening?" type event and feel like it was a success or failure based on that. But there is so much more to it, isn't there? This was a good reminder.

Also- I love to hear "introduce a good book and get out of the way". I'm always tempted to make sure my dc "get all the main points".   I watched the Books and Things dvd from SCM last summer and heard Sonya's talk on this topic. It has really stayed with me, though I must admit to having to "sit on my hands" sometimes. Good to see that one in print again, too.

Absolutely! I'm finding this to be one of the reasons to learn more about her ideas. Just in the few years of hs I've already noticed how different my dc learn and process information.

I purchased this and I can't wait to watch it. I'm glad to hear I won't be disappointed.

I find that I'm constantly reminding myself that every chapter doesn't have to be evaluated. Pleasantly enough my girls always seem to end up talking about the very things I keep crossing my fingers they didn't miss . I guess that's what she means "get out of the way" and just trust.

Narration is so very central to the whole CM thing. I don't think it can be overemphasized just how important it is. And I NEED frequent reminders of this. Speaking of narration, my husband just after dinner tonight showed me the Dragon Dictation Ap for iPad. It works remarkably well without having to "teach" the software your voice like other programs. I haven't tried it with a child yet, but I wonder if this would be helpful for recording those periodic narrations one wants to keep as a record.

I can really see how the process of narration helps "cement" what the child just heard and process it sending it back to long term memory rather than staying in short term. It is fascinating to watch.

My favorite reminder I've seen in multiple places lately and in this article is the reminder that you don't need to process information for a child by creating intricate lesson plans. I think *I* enjoy making all those connections, but it was freeing to have that sink in all the same. In writing up some lesson plans this weekend, I enjoyed realizing that I could pretty much schedule things willy nilly, lol, without working to make like coordinate with like perfectly.

This coordination of subjects (I suppose like the concept of the unit study) was hard for me to let go. It was something that always appealed to me about homeschooling and creating a curriculum in our home, before I was married even! I see now, though, that my own zeal can actually rob my child of the delight in making their own connections.
