I'm, trying to get together a list, not sure how many to include yet but not too lengthy, of the people in history that children should know, I'm thinking more of great minds, orators, writers etc., to familiarise my children with. I want to make up A4 pages with their name and when they lived up top, a portrait, and then a quote.
So I was wondering who you would include, who would be in your top 10, or 20? I don't want too many as I want the children to become familiar with them.
Shakespeare seems a definate, but then who else?

Just thought I should add, that these people should be only those who you would be happy to have your children see as inspirational models.

I can see this could become a top 50, but here are some I'm thinking on:
Shakespeare
G. K. Chesterton
St. Thomas Aquinas
Aristotle
Dante
Chaucer
Virgil
St. Teresa of Avila
Jane Austen
Samuel Johnson
Benjamin Franklin
I would like to add more ladies, any suggestions?
Any one seem to be obviously missing to anyone?

Well, I tried several times to come up with a list, but I kept getting stuck on the idea of people who could be role models. Many important personages were far from admirable, so I kept adding and then deleting them! Also, I had some trouble understanding what your main focus is with this list--philosophy, history, literature, or what?
Anyway, I would add Homer and Socrates to your list. Also, King David (Psalms), St. Paul, and Augustine.
You seem to have a mix of more popular authors (like Austen) and authors who have had a significant influence (like Shakespeare or Dante), as well as some philosophers, so I'm not sure if you are looking for historically important people OR just well-known authors of the more moral variety.  I wonder if what you are trying to accomplish with this project might be a bit too broad in scope? However, just knowing a litte about these authors is more than many know, so that is great!

I have to agree with your post. I'm wondering how many people I will put on my list only to take off later.
I thought I had a particular focus too but it seems to be expanding, or loosing it's focus. I probably shouldn't try to think too much 9 weeks out from expecting a baby  I'm just bubbling with idea's at the moment that are struggling to find form.
I was reading a book recently that said that rather than trying to read the 100 great books to choose a few to know really well. It got me thinking that although we will look at a great variety of people it would be good to choose a list of those we could become very familiar with.
I guess this could be one of those idea's that morphs into something else, or falls by the way side

Just thinking perhaps if you categorised your list with defined definitions. For example you could have ten Saints/people of Faith. Then perhaps an author list etc. You could work your way through one sub category before beginning another, to ensure this isn't an idea that "falls by the wayside". I know for myself if I have boundaries I'm far more likely to begin and continue (at least for a while  )

I like this idea Erin, thanks! It will definately help my idea to be workable. I still seem to have so much to discover in how to make learning effective, not to mention enjoyable.
I'm slowly finding out what works, even if it is from having done a lot of what doesn't
