Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Good morning!

My dd7 is working through Little Angel Readers, we are midway through book B at this point. I added Writing With Ease in February and she loves it!

She is doing quite a bit of phonetic/inventive spelling, even when she knows the correct spelling.

Next year we will continue with LAR and WWE. I think we should add a simple spelling program. Any suggestions??

I have been a mom for 20 years but new to homeschooling =).

Thanks for your help!

peace,

amy

We use Catholic Heritage Curricula's Spelling books. They are called My Catholic Speller. It's very simply laid out and incorporates the faith throughout. We've used them for years, with all my daughters so I'm not really familiar with any other programs.

We have also used the CHC Spelling series and they were nice- very gentle. I felt that it was just a bit too much, though, so we switched to using just copywork to learn spelling. As the children get older I am going to keep a list of words they misspell in their narrations or other writing.

Every word they misspell they will have to write five times.

Then it will go on a list for a weekly spelling quiz. If they get it wrong, they will have to write it five more times. If they get it right, it will go on a list for a monthly quiz. If they get it wrong there, it will have to be written five times and go on the weekly quiz again. If they get it right on the monthly quiz it will go to every two or six months or be taken off all together.

Or something like that. I am still working on the details. ;)

I read about this in Kimberly Hahn's book Catholic Education: Homeward Bound

Sequential Spelling by Avko is simple to use, takes little time and seems to stick. It doesn't cover any rules though. So if you want to include rules you might try All About Spelling.

My 2nd graders have all done 1 or 2 lines of very simple daily copywork at that age. We talk about 1 or 2 of the words that are in the sentence.

We also play "How to spell......?" at the table a lot, just for fun. It helps them to develop the habit of visualizing words in their head.

For those who don't have Catholic Education : Homeward Bound ( I don't at this time), Ruth Beechick discusses this method as well, in her Three Rs book on Language Arts.

This is my plan as well for 2nd.

I second Sequential Spelling. It's based on learning patterns of spelling that build rather than a weekly word list.

Amy, I've been using Dictation Day by Day Modern Speller 2nd Year by Kate Van Wagen as described in this thread about Spelling Wisdom along with copywork from our other subjects like poetry, religion and history. The link to Jen's blog is a perfect explanation.

My second grader has enjoyed this very much and I'm confident will be able to move on to SW by next year. (It has just been copy work not dictation for her).

We have used a combination of The Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading, a very gentle approach to teaching reading, with All About Spelling and the readers.

My dd at the end of grade 1 was not reading, when we pulled her from the school. With in a couple weeks of starting these programs, she had started reading. We are at 1 year later, she is 7, and she is reading chapter books, and her spelling is quite strong. It doesn't always carry over to her writing, but that is what Writing With Ease is for

This is what we are doing right now, too! I love it when my 5 year old- who is an established reader and printer- asks me, "Mom, how do you spell 'cat' in cursive?"
