My 10yo wants to do full CM, but she thinks (moving from Seton here) that I'll be reading everything, and it'll be all illustrations and copywork.. is that right?
AND to top it off, my 7yo wants to go back to workboxes!!?!?! My 7yo who is so flighty (in a good way most of the time, she is quite filled whimsy)?!?!
So, what do I do?? I don't want to be so separated, would CHC be a good mix (again, I'm asking... I'm so green here)
AND to top THAT off, we're dealing with LICE AGAIN (twice in a month) and now that dog is vomiting, so I guess God's telling me the books aren't so important afterall!
Oh and one last thing, go check out my latest blog post, I LOVE homeschooling!! (and emoticons)

FWIW....
I used workboxes with my CM education. It, perhaps, is modified a bit from the stringent workbox system, but not by much. It truly helps keep my kids on track and focused! I love it and so do they.

Would she like to see my 10 yo dd's weekly "plan"????? Illustrations and copywork are about 20 minutes of her day!

I am assuming that you know, in general, how workboxeswork.
So, what I do is have a shelf with 9 boxes on it (it's what fit on my shelf). I have a list of "subjects" and we do on a regular basis that go into work boxes:
Math
Literature (I read)
Literature (they read independently)
Reading
Dictation (for my 4th grader)
Copy Work
Picture Study
Poetry
Recitation
Grammer (for my 4th grader)
History
Italic
Depending on the child's age and the subject, some subjects go into a box every day, and some are varied throughout the week or even month.
I mix the boxes up and try to alternate left brain/right brain work in the boxes. I sometime mix it up and put something "fun" in a box like a Suduko/Boggel/Tangrams, etc.
I also have a list of things that we do that don't quite fit in a box, but if I am being good goes on their velcro board, like practice piano, typing, ect.
I hardly ever include "recess" or a snack, but I do know other that this work for really well.
I look at workboxes like a visual assignment notebook. It has really helped my kids see what needs to be done in a day and know concretely when they are done. Plus, they have been more successful on working on their own, when they can. It also forces me to plan (even if its 10 mins. for the day---which always makes it flow better). I am not as ridged as the system precribes, but what I do work very well for us and helps me manage all the subjects that are included in a CM type cirriculum.
Does that help????

This is very helpful to see! I kept thinking about workboxes but not doing it because my son(6 1/2) still needs my guidance on most subjects, but it would definitely help him to see the subjects laid out and know when he has completed everything, and help me with the planning.

I have used workboxes successfully while doing almost every subject with my dc! Think of it as a visual tool to organize what you want to do in a school day!
I also wanted to add,to my original post, that it isn't necessary to fill every box every day. When I started this with my 2nd Grader we only had about five buckets filled each day. :) Also, I don't feel like I must include "fun" stuff each day, sometimes this can really add a lot of burden trying to be creative each day.

Regards combining CM and workboxes. When I was considering trialling workboxes, I thought about what to put in and realised everything my dd had in her box (CM) would be what I'd put into the workboxes. ie. in one drawer I could put her maths book/assignment, another her history etc. So the point would be that my dd would enjoy the fresh way of presentation. Which does appeal for some children.

Thanks ladies!! I'm like a brand new cast iron skillet here, and I'm trying to get seasoned.. but I think I'll burn a few dishes before all is said and done!
I guess I'm just still working out how to move from Seton to MA or CM...

Does the "fall" mean that I'm going to mess up?? LOL Or that I need to fall away from my comfort zone?
What I REALLY feel called to is "Real Learning" style, but dh and I are BOTH frightened of my 6mo postpartum still nursing 24/7 self!

Both!!!
Let me see if I can do a better job but still be succinct....
Start with prayer.
Read about CM - her days, her ideas, her methods.
Read how other people use CM (not necessary to duplicate, but helps you visualize.)
Make notes about ideas.
Start writing out ideas on paper.
Start an idea notebook for each subject or each child.
Write down more ideas.
Pray.
Go with good enough.
With reasonable.
With practical.
With hope.
With vision.
Roll up your sleeves, get your hands dirty and just go.
Live it a bit, being patient with yourself and with the days.
Pour yourself a glass of wine and give yourself permission to enjoy the moment.
Keep praying.
Watch your children.
Learn with your children.
Immerse yourself in the joy of learning alongside them.
Note difficulties and challenges.
They'll be there.
They'll find you.
Some may be overwhelming.
Take a deep breath.
Don't sweat it.
FALLING doesn't mean you've failed - it means YOU'RE LIVING!
It means you're going to encounter challenges.
You're going to make mistakes.
You're going to have numerous opportunities to GROW AND STRETCH as you get up.
Pour yourself a glass of wine after these days when it's far from picture perfect.
View it as a journey, an adventure...outside your comfort zone.
Brainstorm it - start with your husband - he knows you and your children best!!!
Relax and take another deep breath - God makes up for all we lack. Whew!!!
Pray.
Keep brainstorming.
Keep living.
Keep learning.
Encounter more challenges...some of them small...some big...some GIGANTIC.
Brainstorm more.
Roll up your sleeves, implement some changes.
Pray more.
ad infinitum.
How'd I do? Better?

BE NOT AFRAID!!!
Be realistic.
Be reasonable.
Do what's best for your family during this season.
But don't be afraid!
This choice isn't permanent, just as your choice to use Seton this year isn't permanent.
Jumping off your CHC question from a couple of your other threads...I'd request one of their catalogs and memorize it...but that's just me!
If you feel drawn to CHC (a beautiful and gentle program with many wonderful offerings!) - go for it! Step out right there. It still won't be perfect, my friend! Nothing is!!! But it can be good - very good! And it may give you some time to grow into your own shoes a bit in this vocation...into a place from which you're more comfortable, more at ease about stepping out on your own a little further. It can be a time well spent. And you may find that you really enjoy CHC, that it's home for now...for awhile. All good. Time will tell.
Just as this year with Seton has been a valuable learning experience for you, a year with CHC will be valuable...as will the next year...and the next if you choose to continue. There are lessons to be gathered like a bouquet everywhere!!! Take them. Learn from them. Act with them in mind. Don't be afraid to make a decision, live it, learn from it, and change it when needed...when it fits your family! With time, there comes an awareness, a sense of who you are within this vocation of home education, of your family philosophy of education. It begins to author your days more and more. There are still challenges and opportunities to grow and stretch, but experiences do begin to lend themselves in a helpful way over time. Just don't be afraid!

THANK YOU!!! I have been putting WAY too much pressure on myself. Oy!
I'm going to use CHC for a bit I think, I FORGET that this isn't an ETERNAL commitment to a curriculum!!
What matters is that we grow together, in service and love of Jesus..

I only read to my almost ten year old in subjects which are combined with her younger sister (basically history and some religion) although she's encouraged to listen during family read-alouds.
She'd love to do all illustrations in response but I've told her that I want written captions and explanations as well.
