Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Is it cheating to use audiobooks? We've been getting them from the library and my girls are loving it (first Ginger Pye and now Ballet Shoes). They are 6 and 9. They listen while doing knitting, cross stitch, etc. I just don't have time to do read alouds for everyone so I focus on my nonreaders (the 6yr old hears her bible aloud from me on the couch along with a sciencey book and a FIAR book about 3-4 days a week).

Should I be feeling guilty or should I be excited because they are hearing more books now?

You should be excited! We realized years ago that we could double the amount of reading we do just by keeping a supply of books on tape in the car. It is edifying and enjoyable for all of us and keeps even the little ones quiet during long car trips.

Ginger Pye is particularly good on tape. I'm glad you and the children enjoyed it!

Excited!! I love to get audiobooks. We listen and lunch and sometimes if it is a book that my dh is interested in or that I think he might be interested, we listen at dinner time. Also I get books on tape for books that I have already read to my oldest and I don't have the same incentive or motivation to read again to my youngest. I reserve my read aloud for books that we are discovering for the first time.

Unfortunately, our library doesn't have a great selection of books on tape so, I don't get as many as I would get otherwise. What are the best sources of audiotapes besides your local library? do you buy or rent?

Another vote for excited. for the first time, i added them this year - i got a few jim weiss cds to go with our history. we had to buy a boombox for my son - he wants to hear the cds over and over, while cleaning his room, sweeping the garage, etc. what a storyteller JWeiss is! i'm so glad we didn't miss out on these tapes - they are the same stories i read to my kids, but they really have added something special.

I only WISH I could add more to our day! Our library has a very slim selection, so I can't really get many and they are so expensive to buy.

Paperbackswap.com (the paperback book swap site that amyable recommends) also swaps audiobooks, but you have to use 2 book credits to get one audiobook.

OK, I guess I will be happy rather than feel guilty.

I'm so relieved! We have a good library that has a lot of selections. I don't know about other resources...

Books, I am possibly the world's greatest lover of audio books. It is not cheating...it saves us from wasting time! Car time and cleaning time are enhanced by a good book on tape. I wish I had had them when I was a younger person.

Other benefits:

Kids get to hear vocabulary pronounced correctly.
They get to hear accents from around the world.
They get past the dull parts (and many great books have dull parts) quickly...and may get more out if long passages that they do not have to slog through.
They can rewind if they miss something.
A child struggling with reading does not fall behind (I had a late reader, and I used to joke that she was the most literate illiterate child I knew...).
Unlike TV, audio books keep the imagination going.
Audio books promote good listening skills...as kids get older, I add audio programs and lectures from The Teaching Company, Ignatius, etc.

One more word on audio books for non-readers: My dh's s-i-l, who had a late reader similar to mine, decided audio books were cheating, and in fact, she cheated her son out of many great stories (I love her dearly, but we disagreed here!).

If you have not done so, take a look at my
audio pages for ideas and inspiration. They are not exhaustive, but you can get a good idea of them many, many books available.

Books,

I am so glad MacBeth chimed in here b/c she turned us onto ds favorite audio book of all time...The Five Children and It...he loved it precisely b/c of the accent used the sand fairy.

Also, if I ever win the lottery (although I don't buy tickets) I would get the entire Jim Weiss collection on cd. My dream!!!!!!

Enjoy all those audiobooks!!!!!

Thank you for this. This is the area where I'm always concerned. Am I just letting them be plugged into something else electronic? I lean toward no, and it's nice to see that opinion confirmed.

*snort* I could have said the same! books on tape are our favorite afternoon activity. My boys play better together when they have a story to listen to, I think. We do a lot of lego and listening to audiobooks.

We also enjoy (twaddle alert!) old time radio shows on cassette. I picked these up yrs ago at half price books and they are so funny. My kids LOVE Fibbermagee and Molly and Great Gildersleeve and the pair who's name escapes me right now...of Who's on First fame. the word play in old radio shows is really good- puns are an important way to have fun with language, right? at least that is what I tell myself.LOL

Ditto to what everyone else has said! I have started getting audio CD's for myself as well as the children. I just listened to "Bringing Up Boys" by James Dobson while folding laundry the last couple of nights.

I love to read but have a hard time stealing moments away during this season in my life. It would have taken me weeks, maybe months, reading it on my own. But with the CD I was able to get much needed information and all my laundry done for the first time in many months! I even looked forward to my time folding every night!
