Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi Ladies,

My friend has recently removed her 5th grader from school and will homeschool him for the remainder of the year. We talked a little about what to do during a short transition time while she figures things out, but I would appreciate some suggestions for curriculum/resource help for her. She said he really needs to go back to the basics--learning some basic reading (decoding/comprehension) skills and basic Math (reviewing multiplication and other basics). They used Saxon Math in the school. He did O.K. with it but really needs to go back to some fundamentals.

He's definitely a hands-on learner. I suggested some dictation from books he enjoys and spelling words he misspelled with letters as well as writing them, along with just simply reading, reading, reading, possibly a little below his reading level to gain some confidence. I also suggested Right Start Math because they usually have a transitional book that helps kids jump into their level. (She's familiar with the program as she used it with her oldest a while back)

How does one go back to the basics at this age without using resources that seem way below them--as in geared toward a 1st or 2nd grader?

Esp. need Language Arts help. Writing Road to Reading? They have a kit for 4-6th graders that seems O.K. Anyone have experience with that?

She's very busy with kids in school, at home and in high school sports, plus a home business. I'm sure would love to create her own curriculum/plan, but really needs something already laid out for her.

Thanks for your input!!

You know, instead of getting into buying curriculum that are geared to homeschoolers who are doing things full time and might take a bit of start time and energy, I would recommend two things:

1. Get those workbooks that Barnes and Nobles sells that cover the basics each grade is expected to know and work through them. They could also try a test prep book or two as well. I'd go light but just have a set time where they work through that stuff together. I think this will be much simpler, kind of a pick it up and go and the mom will really be able to see where the son is foggy on certain things and needs help.

2. Play games that reinforce skills like at funbrain or places like http://www.sadlier-oxford.com/phonics/student.cfmthis

(Hope that link came through; having trouble with it!)

3. I think your emphasis on reading a lot also is good. Maybe he could keep a book log.

I have a 5th grader who needed to work on some L.A. basics (not reading, but writing and spelling) and we are enjoying and finding success with Writing With Ease (3rd grade level) and AVKO spelling (level 1). AVKO has given my very poor speller a lot of confidence and she is finally making some progress after years of no progress.

Good luck to your friend!
