Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Could someone give me an overview of this curriculm? I've checked out the website but still don't have a good grasp of it.

We currently use Sonlight (and love it) but it is so expensive! I just don't know if we can keep using it.

Kolbe Academy has a recommended set of textbooks and reading materials (listed by grade level on the website), but you are always free to choose your own. In fact, that's how I ended up not using Kolbe any longer...I found that their suggestions didn't match my childrens' interests and learning styles, and we spent a great deal of time reading living books - so we just gradually switched to our own living books approach.

The funny part was, this was before I knew what living books really were - or about these message boards! I was very, very happy to discover kindred spirits here.

Nancy pretty much explained it, but feel free to call them. Kolbe staff is wonderful and has fulfilled my needs. I like the flexibility, and I have a special ed child, so I needed the flexibility and the choosing of my own curriculum. I have one daughter with a different type of curriculum, one that strictly uses Kolbe, and the third which uses a bunch of diffent kinds of curriculum. All are ok, and are within the Kolbe standards. It has worked well for us, and we will continue to use it.

Call them for any questions. But, also, remember, what works for one family, necessarily does not work for another.

This is pretty much what we have found with any program that we have used.

We did find a really great treasure at Kolbe, though, for those interested in a concise exposition of Latin: New Missal Latin. It's at the bottom of their Latin page in their book store.

I have "used" 4 different sets and own 6 different Latin I books. Now I own a seventh and in 4 weeks on 15 pages, I and two of our children have learned more Latin than we've learned in 2 years (for me its been 25 years, since I've wanted to learn Latin ever since college).

I like using Laura Berquist's Latin charts, too. They finally make sense to me now and New Missal Latin explains the information on them very well - FORTY years before they must have been published by Mrs. Berquist.
