I'd like to try some lapbooks iwth my daughters (six and four) but my concern is my six year old is sort of -how do I put it-odd? packrat? i can see her making a folder and then putting everythign on there she can find in the house til the point where it has nothing to do with the book anymore and looks like a mess. she has trouble perceiving "toomuch". should i make limits? limits on content?
also what if she carries it off to her room? which she will most likely do adn put it in one of her many piles which me being a first born, type A goes nuts over

I think one of the best things about a lapbook is that the child truly "owns" the material within. Just today, my ds took out his lapbook about the Solar System to show to a visitor (perhaps much to the poor guest's chagrin  ) The book has been well-loved, carried around, and is looking worn. But, ds "owns" everything inside...I mean that he really has internalized the concepts related to this unit, and it is evident as he relates these concepts to others through his book. Its hard to not want to make the lapbook beautiful (I tend to be a Type A too!), and when a lapbook is beautiful, its tempting to lock it away so that it will stay beautiful! But I'm appreciating that this is not the purpose of lapbooking.
I might suggest keeping all potential lapbook artifacts in a folder, and then, when its time to put the actual book together, let your daughter choose her favorites. Lapbooks do have limited space, and it may be extremely meaningful if she does the choosing and narrowing-down herself. It will a portfolio of learning that is real to her!

We keep all the lap books that we are working on, or have completed for this year, in one place in our school room. That way the kids can pick them up often and read through them. After our school year is over, they can take them and make them their own .

these are good ideas. so she can have it in her room once the "school year" is over. also get the "artifacts" first then make the book.

It might also be helpful for dd to first see some examples of lapbooks others have made. That way she will have a better idea of what goes in them and what doesn't.

So far this school year we have 7 lapbooks going between 2 kids. I'd love to show them to you....I'll see if I can get one of the kids to help me put them on the computer  .
I did help lay out the first one for each of them. For the second lapbook, they worked much more on their own...but I did still help.
We are working on a few that should soon be complete. One thing I found helpful is to wait and put the book together after you've gathered all the information you want to put in. It's easier to lay out that way.
