If you have an opportunity to visit these ships - DO IT!
They've been docked about 4 hours south of us for the last week, so on Thursday we carpooled with 22 others to go check them out.
AWESOME!!
We scheduled a tour so the cost was only $4 for the over 5 crowd. Out tour guide was one of the crew members, and spent over an hour with us explaining everything, answering every possible question (yes, even the bathroom question came up!)

At first I said - "Docked in Minnestota???" But I see they are on the Mississippi. Very cool. I know they won't be coming our way - no large bodies of water to sail inland  .

I would keep the site bookmarked, as they sail continuously. I put 500 miles on our van, and would do it again. Just to walk all around the two ships - and realize how SMALL they are and how CROWDED they must have been with 22 men living on them for three months - amazing!
Most informative part of the tour for the guide was during his explanation of the term poop deck, telling us how superstitious Columbus and the sailors were, how they had these dolls they prayed to for good weather, etc. We politely informed him they were not superstitious but Catholic, and the dolls were Saint statues.

We are up in Duluth seeing the Tall Ships. We got to look around on board after waiting in line an hour. They are beautiful but the ticket price did not include a guided tour. I see another ship trip in our August plans!

Paula, does one need to book a "School Group Tour" to get a guided tour?

Yes, you need to call the number on their website and request the tour. You need 15 people, but then it's only $4. The guided tour is great. If you don't have enough people, our "crazy" friend is interested and I may know some others in my area.

We toured the Nina a few years back when it was in Texas. It was wonderful and I was so amazed (and terrified!) that people crossed the ocean on something so small! Somehow I had imagined it to be much bigger.

They were only 30 minutes from us and we didn't get out to see them. We didn't know about the group tour price and there was no way we could afford $10/person.
Not only are the ships small, but they also sailed out of sight of land without the use of longitude. ( It was discovered in the 1700's, great show about it: "The Man Who Discovered Longitude".) The sailed west and were at the mercy of the winds, storms and currents on where they landed.

Wow, they were only 4 hours from us, but just by my grandparent's cabin in June. I bookmarked the site; hopefully they make the same stop next year!!
