I wasn't sure where to post this, but I'll try here ...
Does anyone use Pilgrims of the Holy Family with their children?
Our 10 yo wants to do this ~ we have the book and even the badges, so we're on our way. Just thought I'd ask if anyone else has had experience with this program. Thanks!

I was looking at using it as enrichment for my teens or even using it when "there's nothing to do" as the littles get older. I don't think I'd ever use it as a "scout replacemetn" program but would use it instead as a resource for co-op or rainy days.....
Just my $.02!

Dawn,
How is it going with Pilgrims of the Holy Family? I am looking at it for next year.
Anyone else have an opinion?
Thanks!

I have the book and my dc want the badges
It seems like we have a hard time doing anything in a large group. I was thinking of finding something we wanted to do on the list and schedualing a field trip around that but leaving it more on the informal side and also making things do-able for having young ones in tow....dunno really...I am still pondering this myself!
Anyone else giving this a go? I am all ears!

Oh, I am feeling much guilt over POTHF ... I can't seem to get us going on it. I had talked with my coop moms about doing it together, and they were interested, sort of. I think we were just too busy to get it kicked off.
But! I have all the badges and the book and I know my ds (11 next week) really wants to do it. So I think instead of waiting for the perfect setting we will just do it, alone if needs be.
Actually, we had planned to kick it off with his camping-party next weekend, so maybe this reminder is what I need to get us going at last.
I'm glad to hear others are thinking of doing it too! Maybe we could post here about our experiences and achievements!

Is any one using Pilgrims of the Holy Family right now? Is it very similar to Scouts? I'd love to hear how it is going!
Thanks!

We're just going to start using it now with our homeschool group. I will let you know. Most of the kids are young so we will probably have to tailor some of the ideas for a grade school age group.

We started using it last year as our science program. We only managed a bit of Chemistry, since that was our moving back to the U.S. semester. We're planning on continuing to use it for Science, using it for history/political science/geography where it fits in with our studies, and using the badges. I'm just using it with my two oldest kids. I'm not a large group organizer type. I think the things they ask you to do are very challenging for a 10-year-old (that's the youngest age recommended). But like Willa, we're tailoring. Frankly, I think this is more thought-provoking science than I've seen come out of CHC yet!

We have tried and tried to get a Pilgrims group going. Very few are actively interested in it here. We have half-heartedly pursued it on our own.
Many of the activities will be too challenging for a 10 yo. As at least one person mentioned, 10 is the youngest recommended age for the program. Still, I think that you can start out with a 10 yo and work on appropriate badges while preparing him for the more advanced work that comes with other ones.
I've heard of people trying to tailor this program and others for younger ages; but, with the authors of such programs, I wonder how that may effect older children receiving the same badges after meeting more rigorous requirements. Some though, do manage this by not giving the younger ones badges; rather they give some other sort of award that recognizes achievement without awarding the badges (i.e., holy card of the saint).
There is a Yahoo group for Pilgrims. I think the authors started the list. It is not usually an active group -- tends to be pretty quite; but, there has been a little bit of discussion in recent days/week.

This is an old thread that I'm bumping because I just ordered the book for my 10 yo. It came yesterday, and we have been excitedly going through it since then. We're going to try doing it on our own, because there just aren't many kids of the right age around here to put a group together. Garrett liked scouting, but unfortunately scouting in this area seems to be very cliquish and totally tied to the schools. When we attempted to do Cub Scouts last year, very few of the boys would talk to him (the new homeschooled kid) and the leaders kept forgetting to call us and let us know when meetings were, etc. After the Blue and Gold, Garrett had finally had enough, and we decided to allow him to quit. It *seems* like Pilgrims will allow him to do some of the same activities, which he enjoys, but unfortunately without the group setting.
I'm just wondering how things are going for those of you who are using this program? Do you have a regular routine of doing it? Do you encourage your kids to stick with a certain path until it's completed, or do your kids skip around? Do you modify it at all?

Angel:
I'm not expert, because we're just starting! But I can give you our experience with Scouts and initial reaction to Pilgrims.
Our Scouting experience started out ok, and my son was in an extremely small pack run by a Christian mom I know for a year and a half. We quit in January. After two more public school boys joined, the quality of the group plummeted. On more than one occasion my son was physical injured by these kids (not just pushed or something -- we're talking head-butted). Their disrespect to the den mom and the words coming out of their mouths was just unbelievable! Further, I became frustrated over time with the fact that the den mom selected which requirements would be met for each achievement. So, there was no doing this as family or working on things together. Sam couldn't pick the things he wanted to do for each badge -- he had to do what the group was doing. Den mom was picking the easiest level of each thing. The virtues of Scouting were never mentioned or taught. Sad. Finally, it was feeling like a jump through the hoop, get the badge, commercialized, pointless activity.
I received Pilgrims and we're already working on 2 badges simultaneously -- each child selected one and we're doing them both as a family. I've decided that we'll actually schedule this in for twice a week, more if we can find the time. It feels so good to be doing this as a family, and incorporating Catholic virtues and saints into each study. Because the kids wanted me to, I purchased dark red hooded sweatshirts for us to put our PHF large name badges on. They think that's neat. (Normally, I'd feel hokey doing that). I am making each of us a banner - white trimmed with bright blue - to put our patches on as we earn them. Yes, I'm earning patches, too! I also plan on having each of them keep a notebook of what they've done for each badge.
You know, even if we had other Catholic homeschoolers around (which we usually don't here in rural Maine!), I think I'd be content doing this as a family for a while. That's what the program was original designed for, and I'm so impressed with it and want to implement it that way. Let's keep in touch about how it's going!

Yes, I would like to keep in touch about how it's going! I think that would help me to stay on track. (We're kind of distractible over here. )
Also, one of the things I wondered about was where to put the patches. I got a sewing machine for Christmas but haven't had the time to figure out how to *use* it yet. Fortunately for me, most of these badges seem like they require quite a bit of work. I'll have to ask my ds what he thinks.
He's got a long list of badges he wants to work on, starting with Botany -- even though it's really cold here in upstate NY now. I figured we could do the seed germination and some of the research. Then he'll be doing Gardening and Botany simultaneously over the spring and summer; we were already planning on giving him a section of the garden for his own. For some of the badges I think we are going to need outside help. He wants to do Canoeing, but first he has to do Swimming, and his swimming skills are pretty basic. And I was thinking of taking a First Aid class for the First Aid badge as well.

Angela, we have had POHF for a couple of years now and every so often we get inspired to "try again." This winter we decided it is definitely time. My 11yo son is so eager to achieve badges and he's picked several to start working towards. I'm not sure if we should have just picked one or two, but what we did was to break down achievements into workable steps. Like he really wants the gardening badge, but obviously can't do it all now. He *can* however, begin researching organic pest control.
I like the notebook idea - I think we'll set one up this week.
I love the idea of keeping in touch with each other as our kids work on their badges!!
