Am thinking of using this for the first time. Wonder if anyone has any experiences to share - I've read some of the older threads on this and appreciate the suggestions here about substituting due to possible anti-Catholic bias in some of the resources.

Is anyone using this curriculum this year? I will probably be using Year 1 and Year 4 - and reading The Original Homeschooling Series also for the first time.

If you are using this, I'd like to know how it's working for you and any pitfalls I might expect.

I found it was much easier to use Mater Amabilis than to tweak Ambleside.

We love Ambleside Online. We've done Year 1, Year 2, and will start Year 3 in the fall. I follow the schedules pretty much as written, except I take out all the religious books. That's the extent of my tweaking. I heavily weighed the option between Ambleside Online and Mater Amabilis and felt that AO was a much better fit for us. We don't incorporate religion into homeschooling (we do incorporate it into the rest of our lives and the kids go to CCD on Sundays) so, AO being Protestant didn't make a difference to me.

I use Ambleside Online more as a giant booklist than anything else.

Their HEO (starting at Year 7) is a good fit for my oldest and happened to also fit our history rotation, so he uses more of their recommendations than anyone else. I just leave out all their "devotional" books and substitute with Catholic books of my choosing. At the Year 7 level, *I* have enjoyed many of their recommendations, just as books to read myself!

My 11 and 7 yos are not following the years as such, but I do use some of the Ambleside suggestions for them. For instance, I am reading aloud to everyone from Our Island Story. Our Island Story does have an anti-Catholic slant, which is more apparent in some chapters than others. I am comfortable in reading this book aloud, stopping and talking about any anti-Catholic sentiments that come up, and using it as an opportunity to promote critical thinking. This is something my dh and I are comfortable in doing as part of our children's education, but I know that others have a different take on the matter.

I also check Mater Amablis for books, but the history rotation doesn't really fit what we're doing. So I can't use that as laid out either and instead use it as a booklist, too.
