Good afternoon all!!
We need a second source of income here... no getting
around it. My dh is working over time but it isn't
always regular. Can anyone give me any ideas of
things I can do from home to cover the bills? I was
wondering what novena I should pray for monetary
relief...St. Philomena?? A miracle would be
nice...LOL! I really want something that will enable me to stay with my kids...they come first!
I wish I could do something creative, but what?? I hope you don't mind me asking here...I need some of your collective wisdom!
God Love you!

I'm sorry I don't have any good ideas for you, but just wanted to let you know that I'll be praying for you. St. Joseph is a favorite in my family; he's also the patron of workers.

Do you sew or have a particular talent that might be marketable to local homeschoolers and yet involve your own dc. I wish you lived near us as right now we are looking for a choir director for our homeschool group. I also pay for a Spanish tutor for dd and will be looking for a Latin tutor. I have paid for sewing lessons for dc. We had a lady come and teach sewing for a group of girls once per month. I have considered paying someone for drawing lessons for one child. I would give anything for a good science teacher to take over high school science for me. I know a mom who is paying a talented cellist to be a practice partner for her young cello player.
I'll pray you find something that will prove to be a benefit to all.
Janet

If you can play the piano or sing, you could teach piano or voice lessons. Even if you are not a virtuoso on the piano, teaching beginner level lessons is very easy. I did it while in college, and I would say I'm just piano-proficient.
Have you considered something like Pampered Chef, Mary Kay, Arbonne, etc? I know mothers who have had a lot of success with home-based businesses like this, but of course, the amount of money you make is proportional to the amount of time and effort you put into it. KWIM?
Another idea, if you have sewing skills, would be dress-making or doing alterations.
Keep praying and I'm sure that God will open a way for you to help provide for your family. St. Joseph, pray for us!
Dawn

I'm with you on this one. I too am considering a part time job to supplement our income. DH's hours have been reduced. (It's amazing what 15 hours a week of OT does for one's pocket book!)
I did start my own home business about a year ago with Mary Kay and really enjoyed it. Unfortunatly for me, it was an escape at the time. I was pregnant w/ fifth child, burned out HSing and caring for everyone's needs. I wanted something just for ME!!! When my third trimester began and I started to go into nesting mode, I became very resentful of phone calls at home interrupting my "family" time, having to drive to deliver product across town, not feeling like I could fully give myself to either my business or my family. Of course some women have found was around these issues and have made very good money while doing it. There are very successful homeschooling moms in MK who can manage it all; God, family, business, schooling, etc. but I don't seem to be one of them!
But you may!
SO now that I am not looking for an "escape" but rather to provide for a real need our family has, my husband and I have decided that for us, at this time, it would be better for he or I get a part time job that is just that, a job. One that we show up, give our best cheerful effort, but one that we can leave there. KWIM?
I'm thinking Starbucks, Crate & Barrel, the dreaded paper route.
How I see it-If you are highly self motivated, very organized, have some extra space in your home to store product, have a couple quiet hours during the day to make phone calls, (I have 5, 8 yrs & younger so there is rarely a quiet moment here), can make arrangements to be away for a couple hrs in the evening or on weekends to hold classes, a home business like MK may really be an answer to prayer. If you want to find out more about MK you can go to www.marykayintouch.com .
During times of discouragement I always find comfort in the Scriptures & in Adoration. I'll be praying for you.

I've picked up a few freelance writing gigs here and there. This is a slow-paying business, though. I haven't had much training in journalism (although I've always loved to write), so I've had a few ups and downs. If you're interested in more info, PM me and I'll be happy to share my experiences.
Also, I looked into scoring California high school exit exams online...ended up not being able to do this because they ask you to sign an agreement saying you won't tutor anyone while you work for ETS or for a certain time period after you resign. I asked specifically about homeschooling, and was told they didn't intend the agreement to prohibit homeschooling. However, I was not allowed - nor would they do this - to revise the agreement language so that I had a written agreement that permitted homeschooling. Too bad...the hours were pretty workable.
I know just how you feel. Keep trying...you'll be given opportunities, I just know it.

A good friend of mine has had great success this past year selling Tastefully Simple products...sort like Pampered Chef only with food instead of kitchenware (which means you get tons of repeat orders—people always need more food). She does a couple of parties a week in the evenings after her husband gets home from work.
I'm sure she'd be happy to answer any questions if you're interested—her name is Lisa and here's a link to her website.
