Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We're planning a trip to DC in the near future. Our oldest dd's are asking to go to the Holocaust Museum since we just covered this in our history studies. At what age is this museum appropriate? Our older two are 14 and 12.

Thanks!

I think the museum recommends age 13, but you know your daughters better than they do. From what I understand, it is a pretty intense experience.

I agree the museum is an intense experience. I also agree with Nancy that you know how sensitive your children are. As a general rule, I would say 12/13 and up.

As an alternative to going through the entire museum, there is a lovely exhibit you can go through in the lobby of the museum which is a much more gentle treatment of the Holocaust. You do not need a ticket to go through the exhibit and it is free. The exhibit tells the story of little boy who along with his family was removed from their home and placed in a Jewish ghetto. You actually walk through a re-creation of his home before and after. I would double check on the website to make sure the exhibit is still there. It was very well done and was just enough for my 8 year old.

Hope this helps.

They have a wonderful cafeteria there with all vegetarian selections.        We didn't go through the museum as our daughter was way too young.

We went this past summer with our oldest 2 boys (ages 17 and 11) and the 11 yr old did just fine...could be a boy vs. girl sensitivity thing to consider.

I thought it was interesting to see so much about genocide in other parts of the world, both historically, and in current times.

And yes, the exhibit in the lobby is great...and free!

DFW in Texas actually has an amazing Holocaust museum and Center for Holocaust studies- and I took my children to it at an early age. I realize it isn't the same museum, but here is our experience.

At the time, you entered the museum by walking through an actual boxcar used to transport Jews to the concentration camps. It was a chilling experience.
We were croweded in the car, maybe 20-30 people on the tour - and he began the tour in the car by telling us that 70 or more people people were crowded into the cars and transported for days to the concentration camps.

I visited it first alone, and our tour was given by a survivor. His opinion was much younger than what the other ladies are recommending, and he informed me that his own grandchildren and great grandchildren grew up running around the museum.
I took my children when they were I think 8 & 6.
They were fine - and both wanted to know more.
I taught them more, using age appropriate books and information (easy to access, it was a learning center, too so had outstanding resources) and we used it to talk about doing the right thing, standing up for what is right, "I was just following orders" mentality, hatred, bigotry - and so forth. It is a subject (WWII) we return to every few years (duh).

When we were watching the news reports of Haiti after the big quake, all the kids noticed immediately the similarity watching the dead being buried in mass graves to the dead in the holocaust being buried in mass graves with the heavy equipment used and all.
