Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Something tells me there's already a discussion of this going on somewhere, but reading Mary's unit study on the winter olympics has me thinking about a fun way to kick things off.
I'm thinking of ideas to make the Opening Ceremony sort of a party thing like the Super Bowl parties. I thought maybe we could have special snacks from different countries, watch the parade and find the countries on a world map, pick a favorite athlete, keep track of a certain sport using some sort of graph ... I don't know ... I'm just brainstorming. I think this could be really fun and it will be the first time some of my kids have ever seen them so I'd like to make it special. Any ideas? Does anyone have a "Winter Olympics Opening Ceremonies Party"?

We are having Canadian Bacon Pizza tonight and Fluffy Canadian Pancakes with Maple Syrup tomorrow. We love the Parade of Nations! It's our favorite part of the Opening Ceremonies. We all sit around the globe and try to find the countries as the teams go by.

We are using a lapbook to follow the medal tally but I really like the idea of picking an athlete to follow.

I gained five pounds just sitting here thinking about food for tomorrow.

Those Fluffy Canadian Pancakes look good. Dh suggested salmon since the Games are taking place in the Pacific Northwest. Ds12 suggested maple syrup and beer....NOT! Maybe we will do salmon for dinner and the pancakes for breakfast.

I like the idea of a "Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony Party."
It would be fun to have some yummy round the world snacks to eat during the ceremony.....too bad I didn't see this before our Cost-Co trip.

We will use a laminated World Map to color in the countries as they process in to the ceremony.

I ordered the Amanda Bennett unit study and have printed off some of the go-along mini books from HomeSchoolShare, then some we are just making our own.

And with all the snow we have here around DC my boys are having plenty of oppurtunities for a bobsled and free-style sledding competition with their buds.

I don't know if we'll even get to see the opening ceremonies since they will be pacific time and we're on eastern time. Does anyone know what time it starts? That plus that channel only comes very statically at best. It's all really too bad since it's in Canada this time (and we live in Canada).

Last year we baked a cake in a regular 9x13 pan, white icing...and then used the little tube colors to draw the rings on it.

I'm looking for more ideas too!!

Coverage down here (NBC) starts at 7:30pm EST ...

Here's a link to the NBC Olympics website ... I'm not sure what the Canadian equivalent would be but it might help you out a bit!

We loved the Opening Ceremony!! Canada put on a GREAT show!

British Columbia is GORGEOUS!! We were all ready to hop in the car make the drive there.

It was fun filling in our map of participants, it sparked a lot of discussion. I was glad to see we knew where a lot of the countries are located on the map.

We enjoyed watching all the events this weekend. Lots of great stories and exciting races!

We have a tradition now (since the summer olympics in Greece in 2004 that we have a dinner from the host country during opening ceremonies. This year, we made seafood and spinach crepes (I was thinking crepes/french food). They were yummy and we all had fun eating and watching!

We enjoyed it immensely as well. What a spectacular show! It must have been even more amazing in person.

And I can vouch for BC being an amazingly beautiful place. It was definitely the highlight of our cross-continent drive a couple of years ago. The icefields highway truly lives up to it's reputation as the most scenic drive in the world. And the trees! There are no words. If I could live anywhere but Alaska, it would definitely be BC. Drop-dead gorgeous.

It was great! We're actually in the area and have gotten to see a few events including a practice session of the opening ceremonies. So cool. And BC is beautiful! We love living here. Glad you're all enjoying the show.
