After reading a couple recent posts, I just have to post my own question. My family loves FIAR. We love the book selections and the relaxed, cozy way of learning. We aren't getting to FIAR, though. I am fairly confident it's because FIAR isn't scheduled day-by-day. I feel silly admitting this, but I think it's true. We are making fantastic progress with every material that is laid out day-by-day or at least divided into lessons. I love being able to not plan a lot, open up my books, find the next lesson, and go.
Is there anything out there that is very similar to FIAR in content and feel but is more scheduled? Or...should I just make up my own schedule?
Here's what we use that is working well for us:
RightStart Mathematics Level B
Writing With Ease
Day-by-Day Dictation
Level 2 Advanced readers from Sonlight
Faith & Life 2
Reading Made Easy (Kinder)

FIAR involves a certain amount of mom planning. I don't think there's any way around it. We often rotate back and forth between FIAR and longer, chapter books because sometimes the planning involved gets tedious. I can't think of anything else like it that is scheduled, though.

Here is a link to the second grade book. You'll have to page down to find the beginning of the lessons. The other grades are free on google books too.
This has been a great way for us to start dictation. I let dd study it, and then I dictate to her.

I think I downloaded it as a PDF (there's a linky thing on the right of the screen) and then printed from my computer.
I did print it as two pages per sheet, and it is still very easy to read.

Hi Jennifer,
We use FIAR and we follow the schedule as suggested in the FIAR teacher's manual. I just read the information from the manual to the children.

After clicking on the link, above the first page (titled "Preface") google has blue linkies. The far right linky thing says "PDF" with a blue arrow. Maybe you need to scroll over on your screen????

We used FIAR and I just addressed one subject per day. For instance, have the kids do their seatwork until lunchtime (math, writing, reading, religion). After lunch, read your FIAR story and then tackle the science Monday, social studies Tuesday, art on Wednesday, etc. I think there's actually dictation incorporated into FIAR, but if not, you might just choose a quote from the book you're reading. However, if you like the dictation you're doing, by all means, stick with it. I think that part of the beauty of FIAR is that it is so free of structure. There are plenty more years in home school when you need more structure. For now, just enjoy the time you have to spend with your little ones.
