Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

As I stated in the What's working thread, I am searching for more audio/visual learning resources. Has anyone used any of the Critical Thinking Press software? In particular, the Editor in Chief series? I was thinking that ds12 may be able to get some grammar basics down with this. Is it worth the money? How do you know what level to buy?
Thanks in advance!

I think that you can get free demo software through Critical Thinking Press and Rainbow Resource. Maybe you could look into that.

We use the paper version of Editor in Chief and really enjoy it. I imagine the software would be good. The only software I've used from them is the Reading Detective.

Molly,

Did you decide to use Critical Thinking software? If so, would you recommend it?

I was just searching around for some reviews of this Editor in Chief software as well.

Molly or anyone else?

I bought it and didn't care for it. We switched to the books.

We really like it. The paper version would probably be better for one child. I have several who do it, so it works better for us to have a non-consumable version..

However, I will say that I was watching the Charlotte Mason seminar from SCM and Sonia said to only show children proper writing. So, things like Editor in Chief would not fit that criteria. I am not sure if she stated that CM held that opinion or if it is just Sonia's opinion. It does make sense. The idea is that if they are exposed to something written incorrectly too often, even with the intention to correct it, they can get it confused in their mind.

Don't know yet if I will change my approach, but thought I would put the idea out there for consideration.

You know, this is exactly what I have wondered myself regarding the Editor in Chief and other similar material. My oldest dc attended public school for a few years before we began homeschooling, and they were taught "stretch spelling", where they tried to sound out each spelling word and just wrote down whatever spelling they thought made sense to them. The first year we homeschooled we used Calvert School, and they were very adamant that you should never, ever let a child spell a word wrong - that you should gently, but immediately correct them - or else the wrong pattern would stick in their mind and it would be hard to undo it. Our oldest was in 3rd at the time, and Calvert began spelling in 3rd grade, and it was largely done orally, btw. Editor in Chief is usually used with slightly older dc (I think MODG begins it in 6th grade), so maybe it isn't quite as urgent with the slightly older kids, but it still makes sense even with them since dc often begin more intense grammar study at that age.
