Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Once again I'm not quite sure which forum to post this on .
Just would like to know what others have thtough of this latest book by Karen Andreola ?
I love her writing , I know some gave Pocketful of Pinecones a not to good review but I liked it . I like the simplicity she reminds me to strive for in my daily life .
if you've read this latest , care to share your thoughts .
Thanks , Roxie

I'm not familiar with the book but am eager to hear from others as well. I'm moving the thread to the Real Learning board.

Jenny, does the book pick up where "Pinecones" left off? Or is it a few years later?

I don't post often but recently read both books. I loved them. I found them so uplifting and relaxing. I felt my ruffled feathers were smoothed and I was ready to try once more to bring peace to our crazy schedule. I'd like to find more books in the same vein. I'm not looking for tear-jerkers, just something that celebrates domestic life and simple values. Any suggestions?

I was all excited to order this book, but just this morning one of my readers, Penny, mentioned in the comments of this post on my blog that the book may be rather offensive to Catholics. She wrote:

A note about Lessons at Blackberry Inn - part of the story has an obvious Irish Catholic become saved and find the "one true faith". He is a mess before his conversion and then suddenly "holy and good" after. Don't get me wrong there are a lot of great CM ideas in that book - but still, as a Catholic, you might get riled. I did, and I'm *usually* a pretty open-minded type of gal. It was just so blatant.

So blech. Now I'm not sure that I want to support the book with my bucks. Anyone else notice this when reading it? For those of you that liked it- what did you think of this particular issue?

This list of novels with domestic arts might be of help.

I noticed the part about the Catholic being converted and also found that it kind of ruined the story for me. I just kept wondering why she put that in there. And yes, it was very obvious and I found it offensive.

I didn't really care for Pinecones but ordered this one anyway. I desired a good sock-wearing, pajama-binging book this winter and it's easy on the brain.

Came in the mail today. Glad for the heads-up from saigemom.

I will say that the drawings in the book make it worth it for me. Beautiful. The pictures alone inspire me in my quest to keep house more thoughtfullly.

I am loving the book so far . It is very easy non stressful reading . Took it along to the dentist today I haven't come across the anti catholic part yet . sounds a tad funny to convert a catholic one of my fav light reading story was Rose Cottage and I remember one small statement in it about a catholic priest in a mean way just because he was catholic . However then there are also tolerances .I know there are many hatefelt catholics too who make statements on fb etc. that insult others .
I am finding the letters of my grandmothers I've been reading from the early to mid 1900's are beautifully written as she was a poet teacher etc. but then I come across her references of half breeds and her sisters letters ask her about the half breed children etc. It is quiet startling to read . Then I learned my grandmother quit teaching at the mission school because of the treatment of the children and no one could call themselves a Christian and treat them like that .
I guess there has to be some level of tolerance of peoples ignorance and even insults to some degree .
Anyway I am enjoying the book so far .

I adore Pinecones, but I don't want to use money to support something that's meant to proselytize this way.

I like to read romances, so sometimes I would buy inspirational ones, because they're more in line with my values. I stopped after a bad experience with one in which a confused Catholic converts and explains that his infant Catholic baptism was just a "dedication ceremony" and that his re-baptism did not show a lack of respect for his parents' intentions.

It just makes me too upset to think I've promoted that kind of thinking.

Edited to say: I don't mean to belittle anyone who has bought it or does buy it. One could also see the purchase as promoting homeschooling or simple living, after all!

I did buy it and read it. I disliked the evangelical tone of the book (it was preachy imo) but with regard to the Catholic, the character appeared to be fallen away. I was not offended by it. That said, I did not enjoy the book and I absolutely loved PoP. This book was flat for me and I found the appendices to be a disappointment as they contained nothing more than recipes.

I LOVED PFOP! Not so much BI. It just left a bad taste in my mouth. Why couldn't the man just have been w/out faith before? Why single him out to have been Catholic unless you have a reason? It was purposefully done. That was my issue. It did't add to the story.

It doesn't mean I wouldn't still recommend PFOP, but it does mean that I wish I hadn't spent my $ on BI.

I agree with Mary, I thought BBI was not as well written as PoP and was just flat for me. The "conversion" of the Irish man was annoying but the book was written by an Evangelical so it was not totally surprising. If we read books written by Protestants this is apt to happen. In her mind I am sure she is just trying to promote her faith and save souls.

What did surprise me is that she took the risk of offending Catholics (and it was offensive, just not surprising) when we have been such fans of her work. She has probably sold quite a few books based upon the links in many of our sidebars and recommendations by the old school CM'ers who started this forum.

I wonder if one of you ladies who has read the book could mention the Catholic conversion in an Amazon review--just as an FYI to people who may be offended.

Would it also be worth it to try to contact Karen Andreola herself? Emmanuel Books also gives her books nice write-ups, so I'm not sure what her thinking was with this..... I had thought I might buy this book, but now I think I'll just skip it.

Well I loved it ! I also was thinking maybe we only choose and become defensive to quickly . On the other hand the aythor gave a really great intro to & mentioned very highly a well known catholic & orthodox writter G.K Chesterton .
I think perhaps the author was not herself speaking towrads being herself anti catholic but just speaking from how people of the period thought & spoke . It is set in the 30's the conversations are not made to be set in the 1930's but be politically correct for today.
I just was not bothered as much as some I guess.
I find personally people now are far more prejudice then in the 30's and people are more defensive in an agrresive stance etc. when people play pretend that they do not have prejudice as they do in this society today pretending we are accepting of all , it promotes far more prejudice .
Anyway I truely enjoyed the book for what it was and as I said reading my grandmothers letters confirms for me the mind set of that era .
