We are intending to begin homeschooling my 6 1/2 year old daughter, beginning next fall, for second grade. I had her take the Mercy Academy learning styles test, and she is an AAAGV (Active, Abstract, Affect, Global, Visual). I thought the evaluation was spot-on, btw. Now, how do I choose materials from all of the recommendations?! She is reading at a third-grade level, yet thinks reading is "boring," unless she is reading to get specific information that she is interested in at a particular moment. In other words, her interests are fleeting, what she enjoys reading about one day, she finds boring the next. She is doing well in math, slightly above grade level. She loves to do workbook pages, she loves looking at the big DK books about natural science, etc.
I don't think using a 100% boxed curriculum will work for her, but I do need to keep in mind what the state requires her to know, and I believe I am right in thinking that she will need to do the state testing each year (we're in CA).
So, how do I choose materials without actually seeing them? I hate to make a big investment only to find out that the materials are boring or too easy/hard. I have a couple of friends who use the K-12 curriculum, and I know for certain that both she and I would go nuts using something like that!
My oldest son will be kindergarten age next year, and we plan on using Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons, Handwriting w/o Tears, and some sort of math, as well as continuing with lots of reading aloud. I haven't had him take the Mercy Academy evaluation (I think many of the questions would be too hard for him to answer), but he is quite different from his sister. He would be happy if he could be educated completely on the computer!
I guess I just need a little guidance and reassurance. I could post the recommendations for each subject that MA listed for my daughter, but that would be a mighty long post.
Thanks for any advice!

Whatever you use to teach - whether 2nd grade, etc., I'd be sure and list that you are teaching whatever grade her age corresponds to for state purposes. That takes a lot of pressure off.
As for the rest, I'm sure one of the other ladies will have a better idea.

Didn't Mercy Academy give you suggestions? Can you enroll with them if you haven't already? I really liked the curriculum choices they gave me for my oldest last year. A number of resources I had never heard of or wouldn't have considered. The only thing they didn't supply that I needed was a detailed lesson plan. But then, I tend to be pretty needy!

Yes, Mercy Academy gave me suggestions--it's just that there are 7 or 8 suggestions for 8 different subjects. I guess I'm easily overwhelmed. I did find out that there is a Catholic Homeschool Conference in my area in June, so I'm hoping I'll be able to look at some materials at the vendor exhibition there.
