...uploaded pictures to my Kodak gallery of our lapbooks? We have been making them for about 4 years now, and we have many of the FIAR titles, plus others. I know that a visual is very important to some people, so wondered if it would be helpful.
I am hesitant, though, because other than my trusty laminator and some construction paper, I don't have many resources, so I think they might be a bit low-tech, if you know what I mean!!
Let me know, because I just got a scanner, and I'm itching to use it!

Katie,
I would love to see pictures of your lapbooks! I don't mind "low-tech". I've haven't yet been brave enough to try a lapbook, so I appreciate seeing lots of samples.

Thanks, ladies. Now I have a ***project***!
And Mary, yes of course you may ask. My husband works for Peace Corps. We've been here about 18 months, and will be here at least another year. It's a fun place to live!

Katie -- that sounds awesome! We have a special fondness for Eastern Europe as we have many friends from the old Soviet Bloc countries that we met in Austria.
What a cool life for you and the kids!
And thanks for offerring to post your lapbook pictures -- I'm looking forward to seeing them.

Dear all,
I just wanted to let you know that I haven't forgotten!!
Life, as usual, got in the way a bit here.
I'm not sure if the bombings of the gas pipeline here in Georgia made the news or not. We actualy don't use gas, but it has had a sort of domino effect, and I have been without DSL, without electricity, and without water, for all or most of the day (and night) this past week. Phone service is sporadic. The fact that we got a very uncharacteristic foot of snow has not helped. Usually it just melts off by noon, but we've been stranded at home due to the state of the roads. I have good tyres and 4-wheel drive, but 80% of the population drives an ancient Lada with no brakes and no tread. It's just safer indoors!
I did upload one folder book before all this, though I'm not happy with the pics. I think it is hard for you to see the layout, so I'm bugging dh to bring a digital camera home from work; I think it will work better than the scanner. The children think it's cool that their books will be on the www for all the worls to see :).
Here's our folder book for Follow the Drinking Gourd: Follow the Drinking Gourd Folder Book. I hope it is helpful - many more to come soon. I realy want to encourage those of you daunted by the prospect, because with very little in the way of resources or ideas, my kids made something they are very proud of. As you can see from this one, ds was having a love affair with bubble writing at the time!!
If I may I'll add a note about how I make folder books. I chose this one as an example of one you could easily make in a week, a la FIAR.
I use two file folders which I have folded like a shutter and then glued together by one short flap. I think there are good pictures of this process on the net somewhere. This creates six small flaps and two larger open spaces, plus a front and back cover. You can always tape on some cardstock if you need more room.
I usually sit down Sunday night with a FIAR manual, and the internet, and then make a list of topics I want to cover eg. cotton, underground railroad, flags with stars, compound words, analogy etc. Then I usually go to Enchanted Learning for maps, flags, info to print. My next step is often Google and Google Images for a few pictures to add to the folder books.
As we cover each topic I present maps to colour, info to read then narrate back, ask for a story to be written etc. I try and put it in a format that will go into a folder book, but really anything can go into a folder book; a letter sized piece of paper can simply be folded in any number of ways and glued in. I don't sweat it all too much. Sometimes things sort of evolve like the constellation cards my ds made for this book. We were just looking at an encyclopaedia page of all the constellations and discussing them and their names, and he decided to copy a bunch of them and then laminate the little cards. They love to laminate everything!! Okay, so do I, I admit it.
On Friday or whenever we feel done we make a cover, glue two folders together and glue it all in. Voila! The children are always very proud of the "books". With the younger ones I have more of the books ready and we talk about stuff as we glue in pictures and write words etc.
If I can answer any questions I would be glad to. Again, sorry it's not as "clear" as I had hoped.

Hi, Katie. Your link to Kodak gallery gives the message that you need to use the Share Photos feature. I couldn't access your pics from the link you gave.
