I have been studying the Serendipity site for next year. It is so full of neat things and ideas.

My question is this: My dd will just be turning 5 in August and will be doing K work next year.

My ds will be turn 7 in Nov (so he will be 6.5 at the start of next school year).

I know my dd would love the fairies in the alphabet path. I know my ds would love the American History path (and might object to fairies- though I never know with him ).

I can't do both at once with two kids... can I? I would rather keep things simple and have them working on the same path. Those of you who have been using Serendipity- what would you suggest?
Looking for advice... thanks

I have been using it for 5 kids, ages 2-9. The 8 and 9 year old don't do the alphabet path, but they do the flower/botany that we are working on. We all stay on the same letter/topic, I just adjust activities to fit different age ranges. It's been working out pretty well.

My 9 yr old doesn't do any phonics involved with the alphabet path, but would be totally bummed if she wasn't included in hearing the story with the song and coloring in the picture. And most of the ideas for music, art, botany, fairy tales, etc are very appropriate for older children as well.

If it were me, I'd focus more on the path and skip the history, only because I don't think studying American History is crucial for 5 and 7 yr olds. Pick your read alouds based on the letter of the week and make sure to get in the more boyish stories (like St. George and the Dragon for G) and maybe just don't make him color in the fairy unless he wants to???

Lisbet-

are you planning to do the history trail then next fall?

I like the idea of focusing on the more boyish books for ds.

I want this to be something we all enjoy (not something I get stressed about trying to do too much at once).

The problem is it all looks like fun

Melinda,

Great question. I have been studying the website, too...there are so many wonderful ideas that it is difficult to know where to begin and what is most age appropriate.

My dd will be 4.5 in the fall, and I was going to do Along the Alphabet Path.

If this is what you choose, are you going to supplement with something for numbers and phonics? Or does one just "go down the path"?

Thanks for your question!

To add to your question: Does one do a "path" in addition to "baskets"? Ie: Along the Alphabet Path with a science basket?

Or am I making this too complicated.

Thank you for letting me piggy-back onto your question. I look forward to others' replies.

If I do the alphabet path I was planning on doing the science baskets as well. I already do RS math with my ds, so we will continue that.
My dd will just be turning five, though, and I didn't start anything really formal with my ds until he was almost six. I don't want to overwhelm her, you know?

Oh my, I think I have some housekeeping to do this summer. This is getting too complicated. You don't need science baskets with the alphabet path. By the fall, every letter will have a science-themed book component along with the botany (most of them already do, but there are some missing in the middle). Take a look at B is for Bugle Fairy. See all the bird books? C is for Creeks and Ponds. The baskets are for people who might be doing the history and want to use picture book science, or for people who aren'y doing any of it but just want science book baskets. You CAN ignore the science already in the Alphabet Path and do the baskets, I guess, but it's kind of fun for the science baskets to match the letter.

Elizabeth,

I find it very convienent and easy to plan when we are all on the same letter for each subject. Of course we rabbit trail off here and there, but it is a nice way to stay organized, and we cover so much this way.

It is just so amazing how generous you are to share this with all of us. A real blessing.

Thank you for clarifying. I think the organization is fine... I think I'm just a little slow . The more I go through the posts the more I am figuring out how it is set up. It's like going through a big treasure chest .

Yes, thanks for this wonderful site!

I haven't done the Alphabeth Path yet, but am going to start it this summer with my 2 and 7 year old. Can't wait. You all are giving me lots of ideas. Thanks so much!

Elizabeth and all, thank you very much for clarifying. I am a newbie to all of this, and I greatly appreciate everyone's feedback. I'll keep searching through posts!

God Bless,

Does anyone know if there is a link somewhere to get to the Z is for Zinnia post and story? I am looking but can't find it... though I know the Serendipity team is working on the site. Is the Z still coming or am I overlooking the link?

Thanks!

Z was just posted this weekend...you can see the end of the story here.

Having access to the whoe path at once should help greatly for those of you planning for next year.
