Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've read in recent posts that others besides myself have had difficult times with our 9 year olds. I have also read through Waldorf sources that this is a difficult year because this is the age when kids realize that their parents have flaws and maybe aren't the bravest, smartest, ooolest people out there. And so they start to challenge.    Other than that I can't recall what else is hard at this age; but, I'm really struggling with mine recently and this time of the year isn't helping. I remember this beinng a very tough time with my eldest as well although he struggled more so with my dh. My current 9 yr old is showing me more of his angst...maybe because we've always been especislly close/alike. It's tough because he has always been a calm, easy going, fun, and super sweet child and now everything makes him angry. He complains about everything and can be even mean.

So, I'm reaching out to see if others have more info to add about what is going on at this age and also any ideas that have worked for you and your child.

Hi Jackie,

I remember another Mom telling me the challenge of 9 year olds, but she didn't get specific like you did. Our 10 year old is alive and well but boy, your description was a good explanation of the "phase" she went through when she was nine.
Now our dd who is 8 is beginning to test us (could she be following in the footsteps of her dear older sister?) She is a good kid, but she's watching dh and I. I think the phase kicked in for her when I cut her hair against her wishes, as she wasn't brushing it and it showed Now she is taking much better care of it , so that was a learning lesson (learned from friends of ours they had to do that as well with their dd's hair).
I look forward to hearing how others handled the 9 year old stage. Thanks for starting this thread Jackie

Waldorf recommends that for 9 yr. olds you let them have more hands on activities (build a bird house, grow a garden, farm work, etc.) so they can get out of their heads a bit. They need physical activity to combat the things that are going on inside of them hormonally.

This year has been a struggle with my 9 yr. old. She has been very emotional lately and you could get whip lash from the mood swings. It has been difficult to be patient through all of this. We were letting her help with the chores (we live on a farm) but that dwindled down as the weather became quite cold.   I think, though, that we are going to have start it up again, if for no other reason than my sanity.

Blessings,
Julia

I will be watching this thread closely. I can't recall having behavioral troubles with my son at this age, but he did struggle a great deal academically, so I think perhaps the behavior may have been masked.

I have a dd who will soon be 9. Several of her friends have already turned 9 and I am incredulous with the way some of them have behaved recently. Even the ones whom I least expected to have any issues have been incredibly mean.

Jackie, those 2 links are excellent! Thank you! I will have my dh read them too!
