I was just perusing the Memoria Press catalog and I was wondering if anyone has used any of their other products besides Latina Christiana. Some of these things look interesting and I was wondering what you thought of them...like the Christian Studies, Lingua Biblica and Logic programs...anyone??

Donna,
I am using their Christian Studies book 1 this year. I am using it with my 3rd grade boy and my 7th grade girl. It is really geared to 3rd grade but since we never did a formal study of the Old Testament before my 7th grader is also benefiting from it.
I don't do it as formal as they present it. We do the reading for the lesson and then discuss the questions orally. We use the maps and the memorization verses.
WE are also using Traditional Logic with my 7th grader. We use the book and the DVDs. I haven not found the DVDs for this course as helpful as the ones for Latina Christiana. They seem to be just the same as the book with few extra explanations. The course is good I think. It is clear and straight foward but it is not as fun as Mind BEnders or the Dandy Lion workbooks that my dd had been using and it is what she identifies as Logic. The course is designed to be completed in a semester but we are taking it slowly.

Donna,

We've used (and really liked) the Traditional Logic and Material Logic books (and hope to get to the Rhetoric before my 12th grader leaves for college). This same son is also pitching a logic course using TL for local homeschoolers - I hope it works, cause it'd be a great way for the next two to go through the book! He took the courses online through ISLAS (although the teacher has changed now, and I'm not sure if they're still using the books).

I also have two kids using the Ludere Latine (if I remember the name correctly) and I love the reinforcement it gives for LC.

In September, I will have a bright 6th grader and an average 7th and 8th grader. Do you think they could handle Traditional Logic 1 by Memoria Press?

I am also considering beginning with something more fun like Fallacy Detective, although I haven't seen it first-hand.

Has anyone used either product? What about the DVD's Memoria Press has produced for the Logic 1 book?

My 8th grader and 10th grader are studying Traditional Latin I (with my 12th grader as teacher!). I think they're at good ages - I'd hesitate to do it with younger kids (my 6th grader, who's doing algebra this year, isn't in the class).

I haven't seen the DVD's.

Maureen,
I am using Traditional Logic, the book and the DVD with my 7th grader this year. I found it over her head. I didn't think the DVDs are as helpful as the Latina Christiana DVDs. I find that he pretty much repeats what is said in the book (at least to the point we are -were).

Since my dd was in 4th grade we use different logic programs - Mind Benders, the Dandy Lion logic series Dandy Lion and Fallacy Detective. She found all of those very engaging and fun. The problem is that she had a rude awakening with the Traditional Logic. She found it mortally boring and had trouble following. I started doing the lessons with her and that worked out find. But then I could follow up and we have set the logic aside until next year.

Thanks for the input. Based on feedback, I'm leaning toward waiting one more year on the Traditional Logic. I'll scope out the Fallacy Detective!
