Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Since I first started homeschooling, I have wondered over this question. If you are not able to school for a long period of time--like 20 weeks of hyperemisis for example--who steps up to teach the kids? Is it workbooks, videos, husband, older child, local school, homeschool co-op or do you just take longer to do the same work?

I LOVE this question -- and can't wait to hear answers.

Daddy, older cousin, audiobooks when I can't read aloud, Netflix videos, Enchanted Learning and other worksheet making sites

I am recovering from surgery at the moment so all of this is very relevant for our family.

We plan to do a two day mini election unit on Monday and Tuesday. I am praying God uses this time to help me relax and allow Him to direct our homeschooling.

Hope this helps a bit...

Marybeth

My mom and dh homeschooled the dc in 2007 for about 4 1/2 months when I had pg complications. They did a great job! In God's providence, I finished my lesson plans for the rest of the year on a Sunday, and the following Thursday I was unexpectedly no longer able to homeschool. I know I don't have to tell you guys this, but wow--every time I think about it I'm reminded of how God really does take care of us, and that He is in charge of everything!

Not that my children are all that old to "have" to get things done.....but last year.....it was lots of Audiobooks, unschooling, play, daddy at the dinnertable, and of course, my oldest daughter

When I was very sick for about a year, my mom and husband actually put the kids into public school. Then I had 8 kids from newborn to 14. The kids and my husband were living with my parents and I was there after I was out of the hospital. It was totally overwhelming for my mom to think about schooling them and taking care of a newborn and 15 month old, and my husband usually was with me. The kids certainly didn't suffer from public school, but they also didn't learn alot either.

When I have had prolonged illnesses since, although not as severe, we have just slowed everything down, and just did what we could. Alot of read alouds, lots of help from the older kids and Daddy, and workbooks, that the kids could manage on their own.

This is really interesting.

We've never lived near family, but the first year I homeschooled a neighbor friend who has fibromyalsia sort of explored the idea of me including her youngest. I couldn't have done it then and didn't, but now I think....maybe....and I did homeschool another family's 6 kids a few days a week with my (then) 5 for about a month before I got pregnant with James. It went very well since our families worked well together and our curriculum was the same.

I'm curious about how you use audio books. When and where do you listen to them? Is there a set time? A set place? We almost always have one going in the car, but they are rarely from our curriculum. I wonder if I should just buy some of the books on audio up front?

My oldest daughter.    My oldest son is beginning to pitch in with that as well. My husband works from home and also pinch hits for me. It is the reason why we intentionally built a family-centered life.

There are days when we all need a break, so I collect educational videos (mostly history) to watch. This comes in handy when the whole family is down with the galloping hifungaboogie. We use audiobooks in the bus, when we go on an outing.

Professionals of all kinds have been sort of substitute teachers for us - the sewer workers repairing lines under the street, and the archaeologist working a dig on the base where we lived. Doctors, lawyers, priest and deacons, and even the FedEx man. We'll learn from anyone!

Blessings,

I get hmg sickies...
We've always pretty much been on our own.

I've learned that they CAN read directions on their own in many subjects, like math. A certain level of independent learning starting at around 2nd grade is a MUST in our home.

I've learned I can grade a paper laying down just as well as sitting at the desk.

Dh will do some stuff, but he has to work for pay too.

Planning ahead is also a must. At least a semester of what and how much is expected for most weeks so they aren't constantly asking, "What should I do?"

I'm only schooling one and it's only Kindergarten, but most of our work is one-on-one. I know where we are and what to do next. We don't have workbooks, but some syllabi to guide us along. But it's all loosely followed, and nothing is written down. So much of what we do is reading aloud, following the seasons, feast days, rabbit trails...very interest driven.

I've been pondering this question myself, Rachel. Could dh step in without me? I do think so, but not without me writing more detailed plans, which I don't do.

oh and I sorta school year around, so "off days" aren't as big a factor.

we take a week for christmas (little more since baby is due then this year) and easter and a couple weeks to all of June

but other than that, we just continue on through out the year.

I correct work and go over new material from the couch, which is not very far from the bathroom. I enlist more help than usual from older kids. Husband kindly kicks in with more help cooking than usual. We hobble along, grateful for a good day when it comes, but just generally feeling joyful and richly blessed to bring another little one into the world. It does take longer to finish work, but after all these years and all these babies we have never finished in June "behind".

I should have said that I am NOT pregnant but was only trying to give an example of something that would incapacitate us as teachers for a long period of time and might require other arrangements for schooling.

This is true here too. And Anthony loves to remind me that our current "no knives until you are 3" rule is based on the fact that he used to make PB&J lunches for everyone when he was 3 and I was pregnant and .

Hmmmm, you've reminded me that writing down our plans started during another bad pregnancy. Then Bill was sometimes able to help me and would know what to do. It seems that necessity was the mother of invention.

This is a good reminder that if we persevere we don't have to finish the year feeling behind.

When I was pregnant this spring, my sister stepped in for me for six weeks. Luckily, I'm a planner and had most of the stuff easily accessible for her, and I also was able to be on the couch by them so that I was semi-available. It went pretty well, all things considered. My 9 year old will sometimes lead circle time for the preschoolers too, and she loves to do that!
