For the second year in a row, less than a month into our school year, our finished basement flooded. We didn't loose as much as last year because we replaced many bookcases with hanging shelves but we still lost a lot. Last year it was a septic backup so the basement had to be gutted completely, this time it is rain water so hopefully all we have to do is dry it out. Ugh what a mess though! My entire house is a mess as we dragged stuff up as fast as we could as shoved it where ever we could.
I am going to try to take this week to really scrub the basement and develop a plan for putting everything back. Last year it took 6 weeks and some stuff was still in bags now. I have decided to use this as a reason for deep reflection about what I NEED to keep.
Sigh. We had never flooded before last year, so 2 years in a row now have me wondering.

LeeAnn-
Sorry to hear about your basement. Good luck cleaning up and settling back in. Try not to go too crazy with the mess in the meantime.
I have been wrestling with the "what do we need" question lately as well. It is not easy (especially with children of different ages and the possibility of future children).
Sending prayers your way.

I'm so sorry about your basement! Praying for the Holy Spirit to help you and led you into making the decisions about what to keep and not to keep.

LeeAnn,we used to live in Illinois,I can certainly relate. The frequent floods was one of the reasons why we moved to a different state.I'm sorry that you have to go through this.

this IL sister hears ya!! after living here for years, dh finished the basement. then you can guess what has happened the past two years.
it is so depressing right now. we have 1800 sq ft total, so really "use" our basement, kwim??
Dh (and about 30 others) bought bad gas (their tanks flooded) out in the country and so we are down to one car, until it can be towed and repaired. There are abandoned cars littered all around there!!
Oh, and our computer totally crashed during the flood due to a virus. So, all of my lesson plans, favorites, etc are gone...
praying for you, and all affected by water!!

Oh Lisa, I am so sorry to hear you are dealing with water also. Check to see if you have been declared a "disaster area". We were, and will be reimbursed for a portion of the money it costs us to clean up and replace lost items. Every bit helps!
I decided to not replace the carpet this time. I put epoxy down on the floor today, and we bought interlocking foam mats to cover the floor. I am tired of hauling out wet carpet Tomorrow I am going to start heaving stuff back into the basement.

I live in Illinois too, and the flooding has been dreadful this year. Thankfully, we have escaped this year, but last year, it flooded so badly that we had to redo a whole room (we have a finished basement that we use ALOT - the girls' room is done there and another bedroom that used to be used as an office, but is now a spare room) and our learning room is down there too. The room we had to redo was the former office - we even had to replace drywall along one wall. During 2007, we had had two other floods too, but they were due to a child flooding a toilet and the washer majorly overflowing. I think that the interlocking mats are a great idea. We did painted cement with area rugs in the room that we re-did.
