Making the last and final decision was fun and then we ran out of money for any books. I have looked in the library in hopes of finding a few but my library  is not the best. I have to improvise with the internet. It is fun and rewarding being able to have such a great resource on hand, but how does this affect the whole Charlotte Mason philosophy of living books.
I wanted to get science for my 3rd grader but we are going to have to do lap books and homemade projects and turn to our states standards for as a guide  It should be fun.

One thing that I always try to do is try to buy for the whole year. This is so silly as we veer off on different rabbit trails and enjoy some things and HATE others. I end up budgeting a bit each month so I can get those "must haves" or the "oo, I didn't know that was available" books throughout the year. This also doesn't put such a crunch on the wallet at one time.
I love your attitude about switching to online and library resources. That's very "real learning". Can you post some of these online resources you find so we can all benefit from your creativity?

I'm totally out of money for books for right now...I improvised language arts with borrowed materials from a friend, my 2nd grader is using an unfinished 1st grade singapore math text to supplement our gnome lessons, and my librarians cringe when I come in with my two-page list of inter-library loan requests.
THat was my suggestion...it takes some advance planning or a willingness to wait, but you can get almost anything through ILL...this month I got twenty books for our War of 1812 study, all the alphabet geography books I wanted, and many of our astronomy books from other libraries in our state...and our Odds Bodkin Odyssey tapes are on their way from Tennessee.
Also, I've learned that even though they may not be the very best ones to select, our library does have some books on the topics covered at Serendipity or other people's unit study ideas...so sometimes I just substitute what I can get my hands on...I figure a book on Benjamin Franklin is better than no book at all.

I wish this was the case here!! I was told I can't request childrens books through ILL  So I am stuck buying what I need/want!

Well google has become my friend, I needed the book Leif The Lucky by the dAulaire's and I just couldnt see myself paying 15 for it so I googled it and found this pdf. That was similar to the book I think... and seendipity has been really nice I am able to pull up some ideas from that.

I can sympathize with you - we have a very small library, and our library won't do ILL for children's materials either. They are pretty difficult to work with in general, actually.

Is there EVER enough money for books???! 
But "library science" is easy. Check out sci. books on various subjects and then notebook after you read---draw a picture or diagram, or write three facts you learned, etc.----I like the "Let's Read and Find Out" Harper and Row series, which most libraries have. I've learned a lot from these simple books! The "One Small Square" series by Donald Silver/Patricia Wynne is another favorite---the Magic Schoolbus original series of books (larger format, more info than the ones based on the tv shows), the "Animal Family" series edited by Sybill Kalas, Nat. Geographic picture books, books by Seymour Simon, and the WorldBook "Young Scientist" encyclopedias are good too. All of these are older classics that even the smaller libraries might have.
Also vhs or dvd---the "Imax" movies, we LOVE Bill Nye when we can find him, Nat. Geographic or Nova specials, etc. Many of the children's "science" or nature movies are irritating and feature a silly cartoon character, obnoxious music or graphics, etc, we enjoy the made for adults specials more.
OOOOPS I almost forgot, check out the amblesideonline.org website, it is a free curriculum based as closely as possible on Charlotte Mason's methods and curriculums, down to using even the same books she used. They use as many free online books as possible!! So you can just print them out. Wonderful books overall though IMO the science can be a bit archaic-------this is the curriculum we are using, it is easy to adapt/personalize and my experience has been very good so far. There is a similar Catholic curriculum called Mater Amibalis but, it seems to rely less on resources available free online.

I do have AO on my bookmarks as well as MA
I love them both but have to be careful with the AO because of the protestant views.
Thank you for the great resources you gave me I am going to write it down. Hopefully I can go to the library soon.

Have you tried talking to your librarian about your troubles? Maybe they would have some suggestions for you, or would be willing to order the books you're interested in. Our library is just okay, but the librarians are really nice and helpful, and I'm able to order books from all over the place and have them sent here.

Happens all the time! I second the library suggestion - they can get books on loan from other libraries. Also, more and more libraries are extending teacher's privileges to homeschooling parents - meaning that you can keep your books for an extended period without any trouble.

Is there another library system you could use? We use one in the next county. It was free until this year, now $20 a year but still a bargain. I can look up books online, renew online, etc. They also allow use to use teacher checkout which is 6 weeks. It also helps that my husband works near there and can return books when we can't get up there. They are much better and nicer than our local library. Also, they are offering classes just for homeschoolers on using the library for research (they also offer to public school kids, this is just a separate class).
We also have joined the library at a local private college. It's $30 a year but has some great resources. A fair number of great children's books and a large curriculum section.
