Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone read these books by Gareth Lewis? They look intriguing. "Waldorfy"--it seemed like maybe they actually included ideas for curriculum?? They have a neat website, "Freedom in Education".

I saw them in the F.U.N. catalogue online.

Angela,

I think I still have One to One. If so, you are welcome to it.

In Christ,
Deborah

Angela -- they're very unschooly and great reads! I enjoyed one-to-one more than the "sequel" but that may be because their kids were younger and mine are too.

Here's a link to the Lewis Family's website where you can get a better idea of what's in the books ... the daughter runs the web and each of the children has a role in the family company.

Leonie probably knows more about this than I do....

I LOVE One-to-One - have used it all the time for maths games, for the booklist, for crafts and drawing ideas.

However, I sold my copy of Unqualified Education - I thought it was too simplistic and played down academics for high schoolers. Yes, we are unschooly but I don't think that means that my high schoolers' education just has to be practical stuff and not university preparation.

My not-so-gentle two cents!

Thanks for your opinions, I had not heard of the book until a few nights ago.
I've been exploring some of the unschooling books, always such intriguing reading---I probably would have made a great unschooler myself!

I own both books as well as the newsletters, as we were subscribers for years. Both are terrific unschooling books, which give not only the theory of it all but also very practical, specific things to do, make, bake, etc. with illustrations. I really like the books (and newsletters) and I think the whole Lewis family offer a lot we can learn from, or at least a lot we can think about and consider.

However, it's possible there are better books out now; books which might fit the bill for you better. These are several years old, they are very secular, and they're European. So, perhaps there is something newer which would suit you and your family better? I'm not up - I'm sorry to say - on the latest homeschool stuff. We've been homeschooling for a long time, and most of my materials tend to be stuff I acquired a while ago, liked, and therefore still use - if you KWIM?

Hope it helps...
