For those of you who own a Leapster - would you say it has really helped your children build skills such as phonics & spelling?
We have intentionally stayed away from handheld gaming devices and I'm a little nervous about venturing into the arena. The only reason I'm considering it is that my ds9 has trouble with memory retrieval. He's slowly learning to read but needs LOTS of practice. Since I'm limited, unlike a computer , I'm thinking this may give him the extra help he needs.
Any thoughts?

It's so funny you posted this since I am sitting next to a child who is using his right now! I can only talk to the littler crowd, but the whole Leap Frog concept has really help my little guys. I credit it with my 3.5 year old reading - he really sounds everything out!
Good luck!

We have been given many Leap frog "things" over the years, including Leapster, they NEVER get used here. I jsut give them to Catholic Charities now. I wish I had the same experinece as Cindy, that would be great

I happen to have one, slightly used, for sale as my little guy has outgrown it. PM me if you are interested.

Leapster handheld are great for our family. Our son was given one by grandparents years ago--this past christmas our daughter got her very own. We mainly use them for long car trips and for rest time durning the day. I(mom)need to rest daily due to the baby arriving in about 4 weeks.
I hate the whole idea of getting electronical handhelds also but this device has been a wonderful thing for our family.
One negative to add------One thing that I am sad about is our son is entering some 3rd grade level stuff but i have only found one 3rd grade level game. Most games for the leapster stop at 2nd grade.
Wal-Mart ALWAYS sells the games for great prices after Christmas!! We stock up and give them for events through out the year.

Yes, I noticed the same thing but that's typically true even with computer reading programs. The Leapster package says ages 3-10.
Thanks for everyone's comments so far!

We use a lot of LeapFrog items but not the Leapster. My dh has a strong feeling about handheld anything, thinks they are bad for the eyes. But everything from the LeapFrog company we have used has been great! (I really like the DVDs!)

My kids have had LeapPads for awhile, mainly used for car rides, etc. ds8 wanted a Gameboy and we said absolutely no (we'd let our oldest get one years ago and instantly regretted it, and eventually sold it)
so we were in Goodwill one day and he saw a Leapster with one game, for only $3. I let him get it (with his money). It's the spiderman spelling game and I don't know if there is something wrong with it or not, but there is very little interaction with it - just reading the story or having it read and then a very few misspelled words.
But my main complaint is how expensive the games are - I wouldn't mind having a few phonics type things for the kids in the car, like the leappads, but whoa, $25 to $30 at Target and I have no idea if any of those games are any better than spidey!

We have leapsters and my younger two love playing with them, but it's just that -- playing. I don't think that they've learned a lot from them. We reserve them for use during violin lessons when they have to be in a small room without me for a looong time.

We do not have any other "video games" in the house except for Leapster. I mainly got it because we were doing so much travel and I needed some more options for passing the time. It's been great for that purpose and while the older 2 (6,9) do not play with it much at home-my 3 yr old is learning letters and numbers on it and plays with it often at home.
I only get the educational games and have been pretty happy with them as a reinforcement to basic skills.
My son likes the Puzzler one too that he got as a gift.
I'd buy one again knowing what I know now. I think they are a great resource for kids that like that sort of thing.
