I know this isn't the ideal, but sometimes it is just darn practical

As we look back over this year and forward to the next, what are some successful self-teaching programs that you have used, especially for grades 5+ ?

I am specifically looking for anything other than math.
I think Teaching Textbooks would probably fit the bill here for many of us.

1. IEW Spelling - We tried this with our 7th grader this year because she was such a poor speller and I never seemed to get to Spelling Power, etc. etc. program with her. It has been nearly self-teaching for her and is slowly building her confidence back. Big self-teaching winner!

I am looking for "easy" art self-teaching for older kids too. Any subjects appreciated.

Any good suggestions?

Usborne has a number of good art books which essentially amount to a self-directed course, if that's what you want. We have the Usborne Pocket artist, which my 10yo loves, and my teenager has done a number of projects in the Usborne Art Treasury. Directions are easy to follow and always, in our experience, result in a rewarding end product.

So those are my art suggestions, anyway! And I'm always looking for self-teaching things, so I'm interested to hear what others have to say.

Easy Grammar. Has lot of repetition and definately self teaching. You might need to explain somthing here and there, but at that grade she should be able to go over it by herself no problem.
