Hi,
Wasn't sure where to post this one.
I have never really been impressed with SOTW - however, two different curricula that I am thinking about it both use SOTW in their programs at some point.
Looking into it ended me up at the "Well Trained Mind" forums. And I keep seeing the term "hive mind."
I have no idea what that means (beyond the negative connotation that I would apply to it) but they must not view it as negative, since it is all over the place there - even in the bar at the top has a little hive. So - anyone who knows more about this - what in the world does it mean?
"hive mind" - goodness, but that just sounds so creepy to me. what am I missing?
Thanks in advance....

Weird. I've only ever heard the term used pejoratively.

That is weird. And makes me think "borg". -- (too many Trekkies in the house)
That's not what they mean, though, do they? I used to be on that board long ago, and it didn't have that hive thing.

Stef,
You are correct on both parts!
Hive Mind

I thought Trekkie too. And figured it was a joke.

I've spent some time on the WTM forum in the past. As a first-year homeschooler, I found the book (The Well Trained Mind) to be an excellent guide - it provided supportive "scaffolding" to me as I put together my curriculum, planned my lessons and set reasonable goals for time management, academic pursuits and general homeschooling expectations. I cannot tell you how pleased I am with our first year and the incredible progress we have made - and I credit the overview provided in the WTM for this success.
The forum is very helpful for quick answers to any homeschool question you may have as it seems to have a huge membership. I think the "hive mind" nickname is all in fun.
Now, that I have our basics in place, I've realized that our next step is to make the focus of our home education much more Catholic - which is why I searched for a Catholic Forum - and have joined here!

People on the WTM message board refer to the board as the hivemind. There have been a few debates about it because some people are annoyed by it. Most of us see it as a silly joke. Really, it isn't a big deal.
We're in our first year of SOTW and love it so far!

Which two are you considering?

WP's Hideaways in History.
SL's Core 6 & 7.
I will probably substitute CHOW with either of them. I keep hearing about mistakes - sometimes BIG mistakes - in SOTW.
And, well....I know this is going to sound silly...and I know that it is supposed to be "all in fun, a joke" with the hivemind thing....but...well...I still think it seems a little weird. If my 18 year old was on a board and it used terms like that, that would have red flags going up everywhere for me.

I find the theory behind the WTM really helpful. I don't end up using most of the curriculum suggested, but there are a number of good practical ideas that I've used.
