Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

DD ask me today why cant she learn everything with a story or fairy tale?

Hmmm? She is like mommy reading from dawn to dusk.

She will be 7 in june and has read all the litte house, oz, narnia, science books, math stories etc..

in every other area she is average or "behind" her age mates.- just like mommy

obviously no curriculuum in a box will quite fit us.

dh has asked that I purchase some curriculum " ...as a guide to keep me focused and prevent panic"

we bought chc for k and 1 which i never used because dd has no interest in workbooks and could already read.

She actively avoids being "taught" and only wants to read read read. she does like to "narrate" to me all day long (translation: gabbs at me about books)
She will hide if I try to plan a lesson. And has little patience even to hear me read/tell a story to her

so we have tended toward unchoolyness.

she has loved the serendipity stories ive strewn and has picked up quite a bit of math from them. and she is interested in a lot of handcrafts.

when ds was playing with the math gnomes dd came up with her question.

So to satisfy dh and dd are there any options?

Can you learn everything from a story (plus a lot of gabbing and nature hikes)?

Maggie

What if you sort of require (I say sort of because it's like pulling teeth to get my 13 yos to actually *do* what I require) a specific topic every week/month? For instance, have her read math stories one week, science the next, history the third, and saint stories to round out the month. If you have a series of history (for example the Little House series you already mentioned), just let her read for as long as that series takes and then thin out on history and beef up the math, science, and saint stories the next few months. If she talks with you (narrates) about what she's reading, plays games (we have tons of math games), and goes on nature hikes, what can possibly be missing?

Sounds to me like you're a lucky mom and she's one precocious girl! No curriculum can take her as far as she's already taken herself.

A program like Sonlight has a LOT of books. Most people think there are too many, and drop some, but for voracious readers, it is perfect....

Sonlight Curriculum

Just remember - Core Level is NOT grade level.

We use FIAR and I consider that "learning through books." That combined with the HSS units...I love literature based unit studies! That is ALL we do around here! :)

HSS = www.homeschoolshare.com in case you are not familiar with it. They are free units that are written like FIAR units.

We use FIAR like Candace. My dd's are 5yo and 6yo and this year is our 2nd year with it. I've also been more hands on and they've really enjoyed it. We also use HSS unit studies as well.

Maggie, I'm with Tina, it doesn't sound like your daughter is missing out on anything.
